OSLO, Feb 21 (Reuters) - More than 1000 Muslims formed a human shield around Oslo's synagogue on Saturday, offering symbolic protection for the city's Jewish community and condemning an attack on a synagogue in neighbouring Denmark last weekend. Chanting "No to anti-Semitism, no to Islamophobia," Norway's Muslims formed what they called a ring of peace a week after Omar Abdel Hamid El-Hussein, a Danish-born son of Palestinian immigrants, killed two people at a synagogue and an event promoting free speech in Copenhagen last weekend. "Humanity is one and we are here to demonstrate that," Zeeshan Abdullah, one of the protest's organizers told a crowd of Muslim immigrants and ethnic Norwegians who filled the small street around Oslo's only functioning synagogue

More than 1000 people have formed a "ring of peace" outside Oslo's main synagogue at the initiative of a group of young Muslims. The event in the Norwegian capital follows a series of attacks against Jews in Europe, including the terror attacks in Paris in January and in neighbouring Denmark last week. One of the organisers of Saturday's event in Oslo, Hajrah Arshad said the gathering shows "that Islam is about love and unity".

A man gunned down outside a Copenhagen synagogue in one of three lethal shootings in the Danish capital was Jewish, a Jewish community group says. Michael Gelvan, chairman of the Nordic Jewish Security Council, told AFP that a bar mitzvah, or Jewish coming of age ceremony, had been underway inside the synagogue and that the 'young man' had been responsible for 'access control' when he was shot. 'We don't know anything yet, it's too early to guess,' he said about possible motives behind the killing.
