Like many progressives in America, as soon as Amy Coney Barrett was confirmed to the Supreme Court Monday night, my social media feeds erupted with anger over the process and fear that her appointment could presage a rollback of marriage equality. I am a rabbi, so my feeds were also full of fellow Jewish clergy promising, come what may, to perform queer peoples weddings. Thats an important impulse

During the course of her confirmation hearing for the Supreme Court seat left open by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburgs death, Amy Coney Barrett was often asked about her judicial philosophy, which she summed up over and over as Originalism. Its a view of the law which was favored by Judge Barretts mentor, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, which says that the correct interpretation of the law is the interpretation which would have been intended at the time the law was written. Originalists believe that their way of interpreting the law is the only way to protect the sacred nature of Americas founding document

As we know from the Talmud (or as youre learning right now), each and every one of us has 1,000 demons to our left and 10,000 to our right (Berakhot 6a:4). Its totally normal, but it can get annoying. Demons can cause everything from weak knees to contaminated drinking water (Pesachim 112a:5), and some have even been known to attack a persons self-esteem with extremely sarcastic and hurtful comments (Pesachim 110a:5).

I went to yeshiva for the reason I imagine many men do: because I didnt want to work. The summer after graduating college, I interned (unpaid) at a newspaper; toward the end, it was intimated that a job working for a columnist might be available. Having spent numerous afternoons listening to this person shout at their assistant, I passed.
