Nosh On Matzo Inside The Stunning LES Eldridge Street Synagogue

Posted By on April 1, 2015

Next week, to coincide with Passover, the Eldridge Street Synagogue will be opening the doors to its sumptuous sanctuary to offer special tours of the interior plus a great spread of kosher for passover treats for Jews and gentiles alike. The synagogue, which was built in 1887 and later declared a National Historic Landmark in 2008, was built by Jewish immigrants who arrived in America from Eastern Europe. More recently, the synagogue has undergone a restoration that features a gorgeous new stained-glass window by German-American artist Kiki Smith and architect Deborah Gans. Though now doubling as a museum and educational space, the synagogue still hosts an Orthodox community for Saturday and holiday services.

The second draw during next week's special tours will be the Passover spread, which includes a tasting of three types of matzo from nearby Streit's Matzo, which is leaving the neighborhood after 90 years on Rivington Street. The factory will be offering traditional, egg and chocolate-covered matzo, in addition to other kosher eats like hummus, pickles and cream cheese.

Tours will be offered Monday, April 6th through Thursday, April 9th, with hourly tours beginning at 10 a.m. with the final tour at 4 p.m. Tickets for adults are $12 and include tours of the synagogue's neo-Moorish interior, plus all the snacks from Streit's.

(JNS.org) Spain moved closer to approving legislation aimed at granting citizenship to descendants of Sephardic Jews who were expelled during the Spanish Inquisition. Last week, the Spanish parliament approved the law, which will now head to the Spanish senate for consideration. The law is expected to go into effect in May, with the citizenship-application process beginning at the end of 2015. According to the draft law, the applicants would first need to prove their Sephardic background through either their local Jewish community or a direct family link. Authorities also may accept applicants with a Sephardic surname or the ability to speak Ladino, the Spanish-Hebrew hybrid language. Next, the applicants would need to show a special connection to Spain such as speaking Spanish, in addition to taking a basic test about the country.
