Vandals target Hollywood synagogue with anti-Semitic graffiti

Posted By on March 19, 2015

Vandals visited the B'Nai Sephardim Synagogue in the dark of night and defaced its walls with threatening and hateful graffiti.

Discovered Tuesday morning, the menacing messages, spray-painted in red, ranged from "I'm watching you" to "F--- the Jews!!"

"It's terrible for the community, the damage is done," said Hava Holzhauer, regional director for the Anti-Defamation League. "It's not only damage to what is a holy physical structure, but it's also the emotional damage that it causes for the community."

About a half-dozen markings defiled the walls of a current expansion project at the synagogue at 3670 Stirling Road. A discarded spray-paint can was found on site.

Rabbi Yehuda Benhamu said the graffiti carried an unfortunate and hurtful sting.

"Unfortunately, I don't know why [they did it]," Benhamu told WPLG-Ch. 10. "If you have a problem with the community or the Jewish people, come sit down and we'll talk."

The vandals left their marks "666" and "Be Carefull!" little more than two weeks before Passover, an eight-day holiday commemorating the Jews' liberation from slavery in Egypt.

Founded in 1970 in North Miami Beach, the synagogue has made its home at its present sanctuary in Hollywood since May 1999.

It is "the premier Sephardic congregation in Broward County" and serves more than 700 families, according to the synagogue's web site.

Sephardim, plural for Sephardic, are Jews who hail from Arab countries, Spain or North Africa.

Synagogue coming back to Long Branch?

Posted By on March 19, 2015

LONG BRANCH The planning board is recommending changes to the city's West End zoning ordinance which could allow a previously rejected synagogue and repertory company to be located there.

The new zone called the West End Overlay Design District would "allow for certain uses in the West End that wouldn't otherwise be permitted in a C-3 zone," said Dave Roberts, the city's planning consultant.

The West End is presently zoned for mixed commercial and residential use.

The change could open the door for a former applicant Menachem Learning Institute to build a synagogue at the site of the vacant West End theater. The applicant was denied in 2013 and then sued the city in a separate religious discrimination case alleging the zoning board discriminated against it when it rejected their proposal.

Planning board attorney Martin J. Arbus said that litigation is on hold while the city considers the new zone changes.

According to Roberts the new plan would allow for religious uses on the second floor of a building that has commercial retail on the first floor. The building has to be on a parcel of land that is 20,000 square feet or more.

The plan would allow conditional uses at the former West End School to include arts and entertainment venues. The New Jersey Repertory Company is under contract to purchase the building and turn it into a theater.

Florida Synagogue Defaced by Swastika Vandals

'I'm Watching You' Scrawled at Bnai Sephardim in Hollywood By JTA

Published March 19, 2015.

Vandals defaced a synagogue in Hollywood, Fla.

Hate messages and cryptic warnings including Im watching you, and [expletive] Jews appeared on Bnai Sephardim, a Sephardic synagogue, the Miami Herald reported. The synagogue serves about 700 families, according to the Bnai Sephardim website.

Hollywood Police Chief Frank Fernandez said on Wednesday that his department takes any type of hate messages very seriously, and promised a thorough investigation.

These are individuals that want to spread hate and there is no place for that in our community, he said.

Fernandez said the offensive painted vitriol appeared sometime between Monday night and Tuesday morning. The gate of the synagogue had been left open overnight because construction crews were working late.

The Anti-Defamation League decried the incident. Hava L. Holzhauer, ADLs Florida regional director, said Wednesday night that the vandalism is damaging to the community. It is physical damage to a place of worship and its also emotional damage.

Rabbi Leol Benhamu told Miami Herald news partner CBS4 that seeing the spray painted messages was painful.

That bring up memories of the past, Holocaust memories and persecution for Jews. I got upset, Benhamu told the station.

Graffiti artists draw on Jewish roots

Posted By on March 19, 2015

From left: Itamar Paloge and Hillel Smith take a break from painting a mural at the Silverlake Independent JCC. Photo by Avishay Artsy

Over the past week, two graffiti artists have been applying layers of bright orange and blue paint to an outdoor wall of the Silverlake Independent JCC. Hillel Smith, a native Angeleno, and Itamar Paloge, a Tel Aviv-based artist, met a year ago through their shared interest in street art. Now theyre creating Jewish-themed murals across Los Angeles.

The JCC mural features a massive orange Hebrew letter, alef, which fills the wall space. Surrounding the letter are blue calligraphic lines that reference the forms of the Hebrew alphabet but are not actual letters.

It does incorporate the styles that both of us work in, Smith said. My work tends to be a lot more geometric and angular, and Itamars is a lot more free-flowing. This layering effect really brings the two things together.

This is just one in a series of works the artists are making incorporating the Hebrew alphabet as a design element. Their current project, Illuminated Streets, references illuminated manuscripts, beautifully decorated handwritten books that are part of a rich history of Jewish typographic art.

Smith said he enjoys the unusual juxtaposition of Jewish tradition and contemporary media such as graffiti. Smith grew up in the Pico-Robertson neighborhood of Los Angeles, riding his bicycle to the comic book shops on Melrose Avenue and admiring the street art of his hometown. In L.A., he said, street art is closely tied to cultural identity, and it bothered him that there was no Jewish representation in street art.

I always felt like, growing up, OK, I have a lot of pride in my Jewish heritage, and theres all this really interesting work happening elsewhere; how come theres really nothing interesting thats Jewish out there? he said, pointing to Japanese-inspired murals in Little Tokyo and Mesoamerican-themed murals in Boyle Heights. So, while not all of my work is Jewish, and not all of my work, I dont think, needs to be Jewish, it did feel important to me. Like, I have the ability to do this, and I can represent my own identity and the identity of my community in a way that other communities have successfully been able to do so far.

Smith first pitched the idea of doing Jewish-themed graffiti projects around L.A. at SEDER, an event where artists present their ideas, and participants pool their money and vote on which artists project to fund. Smiths grant helped him purchase materials and make connections with other Jewish artists. Anne Hromadka, art consultant and program director for the Jewish Artists Initiative, runs the SEDER events as part of her role as director of Nu Art Projects.

Why not have spaces that are designed and beautiful and speak to the multilayered generations that inhabit areas like Pico-Robertson or Fairfax, or going to school at AJU [American Jewish University] or HUC [Hebrew Union College], Hromadka said. There are endless possibilities to be reflecting back on our culture in new ways that are exciting and interesting and innovative, and speak to developing a new language for us to interpret our oldest traditions.

Smith is a full-time graphic designer and has made small-format spray paint work for a few years. He made a mural at Camp Ramah in Ojai in 2013 and met Paloge last March at Asylum Arts, a summit for emerging Jewish artists in New York. About 70 artists participated in last years gathering, which was supported by the Schusterman Family Foundation. The pair bonded over street art and a shared love of typographic art.
