City's synagogue council appoints first Muslim member as 'strikingly close' relations between two faiths deepen further

Posted By on January 27, 2015

BRADFORD'S Synagogue Council has appointed its first Muslim member as links deepen further between the two faiths.

Jani Rashid, a member of the Friends of the Synagogue in Bowland Street, Manningham, has been formally adopted on to its ruling body.

The suggestion to add Mr Rashid to the board came from the synagogue's chairman, Rudi Leavor, who said it was "passed unanimously" by the council.

"We have already established close links with the Muslim community, and thought it was about time they were formally represented on the council," said Mr Leavor.

"I have known Jani for many years, and within ten seconds of me asking him, he said 'yes'.

"The council all said adding a Muslim member to the group was a fantastic idea, and it is a matter of forging even closer links with that community."

A spokesman for the synagogue in Bowland Street, Manningham, said the addition of Mr Rashid to the council marked another chapter in the "strikingly close relationship" between the Jewish and Muslim communities in Bradford.

In 2013, community groups, including Bradford Council for Mosques, rallied together to save the Grade II-listed building - an example of Moorish Victorian architecture dating back to 1880 - when dwindling funds put its future in danger.

COMMENT: SMALL GESTURE HAS VERY DEEP SIGNIFICANCE

"Jani has been a long-term ally and significant supporter of the synagogue for some years now, as part of an increasingly large group of local Muslims who have supported it in many ways, including with significant financial help," said the spokesman.

'Pure anti-Semitism' behind synagogue attack, says Wuppertal Jewish leader

Posted By on January 27, 2015

"It was right here," Leonid Goldberg says, standing at the entrance of a sandstone synagogue in Wuppertal's Barmen district. "This is exactly where the fire started, where the objects were thrown." In his mid-50s and wearing a gray suit, Goldberg, the chairman of Wuppertal's Jewish cultural association, nods to security sitting behind glass at the entrance.

In the middle of the night on July 29, 2014, Goldberg was contacted by a private security firm: Three men had thrown bottles full of diesel at the synagogue. "Thank God that nothing more can be seen of the attack," Goldberg says as he scratches his beard. The flames extinguished quickly, so the damage was manageable. "Following the attack, we had police here round the clock. Now, they are only here during the night."

'Pure anti-Semitism'

Goldberg points to security cameras positioned left and right of the entrance and explains that all Jewish places of worship in Germany are well-secured. The front entrance is almost never used - only for big events. "When that is the case, security personnel are here." The security guard behind the glass waves us through. He must wait until the front doors are closed before allowing us entrance into the synagogue.

After we're inside, Goldberg points to the windows - bulletproof from the outside, shatterproof on the inside. A connecting door leads to a cafe, kosher, says Goldberg, and public. Once inside the cafe, there is no handle on the door. You need a key to access the synagogue.

We sit down at a large table in the back, and Goldberg lights a cigarette. Conversation can be heard emanating from the cafe's main room as a handful of people sit at the tables. A radio plays music, barely audible.

What did it feel like to witness the first day of the arson trial, on January 14? Goldberg shakes his head. He was present as the three suspects, from the West Bank, confessed and expressed remorse for what they had done. They explained they had committed their crime under the influence of alcohol, following a celebration at the end of Ramadan. They wanted to use the bottles of diesel to direct interest to what was going on in Gaza at the time, the Israeli offensive. They said they weren't aware that by throwing them they could burn the synagogue or injure other people.

"That is just an excuse," Goldberg claimed, with furrowed brow. "If you ask me, it was pure anti-Semitism." There was enough public interest in the Israeli offensive in Gaza last summer, he went on. "There were more than enough signals last July. All demonstrations were against Israel - and not just against Israel, against Jews." Goldberg scratches his beard and sighs. "It was just a matter of time," he laments, "that this atmosphere would produce attacks against a Jewish house of worship."

Two Holocaust films highlight Posnack JCC festival

Posted By on January 27, 2015

Two films involving stories about surviving the Holocaust highlight the ongoing Posnack Jewish Community Center Jewish Film Festival running now through March 3.

"Run Boy Run" is based on a story of an eight-year-old Polish Jew who escapes the Warsaw Ghetto and is survived when he is befriended by a Catholic woman who decides to raise him as a Catholic. The film takes the audience on the boy's journey to survival and is being screened on Jan. 29 at 8 p.m. and on Feb. 2 at 1 p.m.

"The film is intriguing because when the Holocaust is told though a child as the main character, there is more vulnerability and the audience will be glued to this film," said Sofia Urman, co-chair of the Jewish Film Festival.

"Mr. Kaplan" has Jacob Kaplan of Uruguay as the central character of a plot in which he suspects a neighborhood tavern owned by a German may be a Nazi war criminal. Kaplan conspires with several friends to kidnap the German.

The film is a thriller in which there are many surprises that will make the audience think the film is taken from the work of Alfred Hitchcock or Rod Serling. The film is being screened on Feb. 4 at 8 p.m. and on Feb. 9 at 1 p.m.

"'Mr. Kaplan' is a story built on suspense and the audience is led to many surprises about both Mr. Kaplan and the person he suspects as a war criminal. The drama is full of mystery, suspense and an ending that could not be predicted," added Urman.

Another film that doesn't feature a Holocaust theme "Hill Start" is a comedy with dramatic overtones about two families, one Ashkenazi, one Sephardic, who are both perturbed when the son of one family marries the daughter of the other. The comedy comes from the stereotypical views family members have of each other. However, a car accident involving the mother of one of the families, forces the families to cooperate and set aside their differences. The film screens on Jan. 31 at 8 p.m.

"The film starts out as being an over the top broad comedy, but following the tragedy of the car accident, the coping and survival skills of both families are highlighted. The film is uplifting to show how families can cope with their differences," said Urman.

The Posnack JCC Jewish film festival differs from other area festivals in that the festival runs for six weeks, as opposed to a limited seven to 10 day run.

"Most people can't spend more than a night or two per week seeing films. Our schedule allows more flexibility than others in the region. As a result, more people can see all or most of the films in our festival because of the longer time frame," said Urman.

For Cuban Jews, improved ties to U.S. may not resolve central challenges

Posted By on January 27, 2015

Adela Dworin has been president of Beth Shalom synagogue since 2006 and serves as the Cuban Jewish communitys government liaison. (Josh Tapper)/JTA

On a recent Friday night inside this citys Beth Shalom synagogue, Aliet Ashkenazi, 25, stood draped in a blue-and-white prayer shawl leading prayers in a mix of Spanish and near-perfect Hebrew.

It was the first time she had ever led services a feat considering she converted to Judaism seven years ago after discovering her father was Jewish.

The 300-seat sanctuary in the Cuban capital was near capacity, but the crowd filling the wooden pews was largely American, comprised of tour groups from New York and New Jersey. The next morning, with the Americans gone, the crowd had thinned. A handful of youths sat in the first few rows, leaving a gray-haired cohort of congregants in the back.

This is typically how things go for Cubas 1,500 or so Jews: Hordes of out-of-town guests arrive, bringing with them suitcases full of clothing and coveted medical supplies, and then theyre gone, leaving Cubas diminished Jewish community behind.

Amonth since the United States and Cuba announced renewed diplomatic relations after more than five decades of mutual recrimination and mistrust, it remains unclear how rapprochement will change things for Cubas Jewish community, which has shrunk tenfold since the end of the Cuban Revolution in 1959, when there were 15,000 Jews here.

If it will be better for Cuba, it will be better for Jews in Cuba as well, said Ida Gutzstat, executive director of the Bnai Brith Maimonides Lodge, a community center attached to the Sephardic synagogue in this citys Vedado neighborhood.

Amanda Amato, a 49-year-old secretary, sipping a plastic cup of Cristal beer at one of the lodges biannual parties, said, We have a difficult economic situation now, but its not for all time.

Already there has been some easing. Americans including the thousands of Jews who fled Cuba after the revolution now can send remittances of $2,000 every three months to Cubans, four times the previous limit.

While Cuban Jews endure the same depressed conditions as other Cubans, surviving on monthly food rations and salaries that rarely exceed $40 per month, the community as a whole is the recipient of largesse most Cubans can only dream of.
