Continuing with Jewish tradition

Having spent four decades as chairman of his synagogue's cemetery committee, 91-year-old Jack Einhorn doesn't mind stating the obvious.

"I know where all the bodies are buried," Einhorn said, standing on Frances Street outside the plot of the city's cemetery that belongs to Congregation B'nai Zion.

Einhorn, an infectiously affable man with an eye for detail, recalled how a pal would always add to that statement: "And I know who put them there, too."

On Tuesday, Einhorn joined a small crowd at the cemetery to oversee the arrival of 17 new concrete vaults, which arrived on a flatbed truck from a company in Davie.

The arrival of new vaults was more than just a housekeeping chore for those assembled, from the gravedigger and truck driver to representatives from the cemetery in Big Coppitt and Atlas Memorials.

By installing the 17 vaults, each weighing at least 750 pounds, into the ground, the synagogue will be able to cut through the steps it takes a grieving family to abide by the Jewish custom of burying a dead body within 24 hours.

The vaults are called orthodox because they are bottomless, allowing for the body and casket to eventually disintegrate.

"So the body can return to the Earth," said Suzanne Teicher of Atlas Memorials. She's also a member of the congregation's Cemetery Committee.

All volunteers and committee members are ready to jump into action when a death in the congregation occurs, each assisting with the various tasks required to complete the burial.

To be buried in one of the B'nai Zion plots, one must be Jewish and have been a member in good standing. A reservation for a gravesite costs $350 up front, and $1,000 for perpetual care, according to the congregation's cemetery application.

Following the Paris attacks, Mark Rowley, national policing lead for counter terrorism and assistant commissioner, said continuing anti-Semitic rhetoric from extremists and the attacks on the community in France have led to the increase in security measures in the UK.

The global picture of terrorist activity does give us heightened concern about the risk to the Jewish community, he explained. In addition to our existing security measures, we are in dialogue with Jewish Community leaders about further actions that we will be taking, including more patrols in key areas.

Jack Rose, of the Romford and District Synagogue in Eastern Road, Romford, said: We all take measures, we are very secure and in co-operation with the police and other organisations.

Portugal’s Law of Jewish Return Becoming Effective in March

First Sephardic Applicants Line Up for Citizenship By JTA

Published January 21, 2015.

Portugals law on naturalizing descendants of Sephardic Jews could become effective before March 15, a leader of the countrys Jewish community said.

The law, passed by parliament in 2013, is expected to be approved by Portugals Council of Ministers on Thursday, the president of Lisbons Jewish community, Jose Oulman Carp, told JTA. The final wording is to be published by Feb. 6, he said.

We expect the law to be effective by mid-February or the beginning of March 2015, Oulman Carp added.

According to the legislation, the government will give nationality to Sephardic Jews of Portuguese ancestry who belong to a tradition of a Portuguese-descended Sephardic community, based on objective prerequisites proving a connection to Portugal through names, language and ancestry.

Oulman Carp said it also will apply to non-Jewish descendants of Sephardim, Oulman Carp said.

Existing legislation on the naturalization of Sephardim has not been applied because it still does not contain regulations for bureaucrats, which may be published along with the final letter of the law.

The authors described the legislation as an act of atonement for the expulsion of Portuguese Jewry in 1536 during the Portuguese Inquisition. Similar legislation is underway in Spain, where it awaits a final vote in Congress. Hundreds of thousands of Jews fled Iberia from 1492 on because of Church-led persecution.

In both countries, legislators and government officials said Jewish communities would be consulted and perhaps made partially in charge of screening applicants. The Jewish community of Lisbon, where the vast majority of Portugals 800 Jews live, has rejected applications because the final letter of the law has not yet been published, Oulman Carp said. Most of the applications will be channeled through the local Portuguese consulate of the applicants country of residence, he said.

Retired journalist to run for Tory nomination in Mount Royal

Posted By on January 22, 2015

A former TV journalist is jumping into the Conservative fold, hoping to help the party shed its negative image in Quebec and win the long-coveted seat of Mount Royal on Montreal Island.

Pascale Dry, 38, said she feels the Conservatives have been unfairly criticized in the province since Stephen Harper became Prime Minister in 2006. The party has never managed to gain a foothold in the Montreal area under his leadership, but she feels that she can help to make a difference.

Ms. Drys candidacy is being greeted as a breath of fresh air in the Conservative Party, and the fact she is Jewish stands to help her win the Conservative nomination in the riding, which has a large Jewish population and has long been courted by Mr. Harpers team.

For the last few years, I have witnessed what has been said and written about the Tories as a journalist, Ms. Dry said in an interview. Frankly, I think we really need to change this bad perception, this poor perception that the Tories have in Quebec.

She said the Conservatives are frequently seen as being hostile and non-transparent in her home province, even though they have a strong record on the economy and in providing help to families.

I dont think they really made bad decisions for Quebec; I think people probably misunderstood the message of the Conservatives, she said. I want to be one of those candidates who will be able to change that perception.

Having just retired from journalism after 15 years, Ms. Dry announced her intention to run for the Conservative nomination in the riding of Mount Royal on Wednesday night.

A key selling point for the Conservative Party in the riding is the Harper governments steadfast support for Israel. Ms. Dry, whose parents are Sephardic Jews from Morocco, said the governments position helps to explain why she was attracted to the party.

She was born in Mount Royal and is currently living in the riding with her husband and two children. She attended primary school at Montreals Maimonides School, which describes itself as a jewel of the citys Sephardic community.

The support from Mr. Harper towards Israel is a big thing, Ms. Dry said. But this is not the only reason that I am running.
