Paris synagogue closes; police continue search for female suspect

Posted By on January 10, 2015

(CNN) The Grande Synagogue of Paris has closed over concerns about security after this week's terror attacks.

The siege at the office of a satirical magazine left 12 dead Wednesday.

Police tracked down two brothers who orchestrated and carried out those slayings - killing them in a shootout Friday.

Another suspect who held hostages at a market was also killed by police.

French authorities searched Saturday for the remaining known suspect in this week's terror attacks as the country grappled with heartbreak following another day of blood and horror.

Police killed three suspects during raids Friday -- one wanted in the fatal shooting of a policewoman and four hostages, the other two in the massacre at the offices of Charlie Hebdo magazine.

The attack at the Paris office of the satirical magazine left 12 dead on Wednesday.

"The nation is relieved tonight," Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said Friday.

But the French government's work is not over.

There's still a lot of healing to do, a lot of questions to answer on preventing future attacks. And a woman wanted over the policewoman's shooting Thursday, named as Hayat Boumeddiene, is still at large.

Synagogue: South Africa plans to repatriate other bodies

Posted By on January 10, 2015

Williams, who spoke in Johannesburg on Saturday, observed that the government acknowledged that families of the victims needed to begin the healing process.

No fewer than 85 South Africans reportedly died in the building collapse.

She added, This can only happen once their loved ones are brought back home for proper burial.

However, 74 bodies of the South Africans had been repatriated while the remaining 11 bodies are still being verified via DNA test.

She said the social workers and the South African forensic unit had visited the families of the remaining bodies.

According to her, fresh samples collected from the family representatives have been submitted to the laboratory for processing.

Williams stated, The South African government has been collaborating with the Nigerian authorities to finalise identifying the bodies.

We will communicate with the families as soon as the Nigerian laboratory finalises the process.

Manhattan Beach resident Sidney Sheres has developed a software program to improve English language skills. Photo by Caroline Anderson

While growing up in the Bronx as a young Jewish boy, Sidney Sheres mother taught him Ladino, a language spoken in few parts of the world today.

The mixture of Spanish, Hebrew and other languages was spoken by Sephardic Jews in medieval Spain. During the Spanish Inquisition, its speakers fled the country, taking their language with them.

Maybe thats why Im so interested in language, the Manhattan Beach resident said on a recent afternoon. It came from my history.

Spheres, a former information technology analyst for Boeing, is developing a new software program he calls Conversation Space to help both native and new English speakers improve their language skills.

We have a large group of people coming to America who all have one thing in common: They need to speak English, he said. Otherwise, they may be relegated to a lower income bracket.

He gave the example of a doctor from another country who moves to the U.S. but cant practice because she cant communicate effectively.

He also thinks his software could help native English speakers who want to improve their public speaking skills.

Conversation Space is really about bringing back the art of conversation, he said.

Sheres began developing the software about two years ago after being laid off from Boeing, where he had worked for 10 years on classified space programs.

On the Market: Living in a Gingerbread Apartment and the Conundrum of Local Chains

Most people would not look at a tiny concrete triangle bounded on three sides by streets in Williamsburg and think, Hey, thats a great development site! But Brownstoner reports that one Hasidic developer did and now Williamsburg has a funny little wedge-shaped residential building which, sadly, bears no other resemblance to the famed Flatiron building.

This is funny: a co-working space called Industrious, which plans to open its first New York location in Prospect Heights, is boasting to DNAInfo about how it will have relaxation rooms, a roofdeck and pour-over coffee. Industrious? Sounds like a good place to avoid work to us.

This is not: New Jersey spent $1.2 billion on corporate incentives in 2014, a record high for the state and far more than any of the surrounding states, according to The Wall Street Journal. Guess they dont agree with Alicia Glens pronouncement in Capital on corporations who play chicken you dont negotiate with terrorists, and the deputy mayor takes another swipe here, telling The Journal that If they want to use all that money to lure companies because there are no natural reasons to move to New Jersey, God bless them. Though the New York City did spend $146 million on corporate subsidies last year.

Cores announcement that it has hired Tom Crowley, formerly of architecture and design firm Flank, as its director of new development, raises some questions vis-a-vis its partnership with Core, Crains notes. Core, which Related bought a stake in this fall with the intention that the brokerage would handle resales, said it still planned to work with Corcoran Sunshine on several new developments coming to market. But will Corcorans toes get stepped on with Core tellingCrains that it does plan to collaborate with Related on product development and sales at future developments, in addition to its resale work?

Just because you live in Lincoln Center doesnt mean you cant also live in a fairytale college/Thomas Kinkaid painting, as this $1.8 million two-bedroom, which Curbed terms Gingerbread House lite, illustrates.

For those with $2 million more to spend and less cozy inclinations, theres Tyra Banks two-bedroom loft on Lafayette Street in Soho, which the model has listed for $3.8 million, according to The New York Daily News. Just dont expect personal touches: the place looks like its been decorated by a wildly unimaginative stager, though to be fair Tyra claims to be moving out because she never spent time there. Quoth her spokesperson, doing her best imitation of brokerbabble: Tyra believes Nolita is one of the most fun, immersive, electric, trendy areas and loved living amongst the best new restaurants and shops. She relished going down her elevator being mere steps away from her fave breakfast haunts.

Once it was a music venue and soon it will be condos. How many times have we heard that? Well, Gothamist wisely notes that just because its a million times doesnt make the fact that the Lower East Side building which once house Sin-, which closed in 2007, will soon be razed for a six-story brick building that would look more at home on the Upper East Side. Lets just hope that means there wont be any offensive blathering about the vibrancy of the neighborhood in the marketing materials.

What to make of the proliferation of local chains? Capital asks. On one the one hand, its good to see local businesses do well and proliferate. At the same time, if Greenpoint starts to look like Park Slope which resembles the Upper East Side, when do New Yorks eclectic neighborhoods start feeling more like vertically integrated suburban developments? How big can local get?

Uber hubbub: Matthew Daus, who was the TLCs top commissioner from 2001 to 2010, tells Crains that issuing $200 fines and shutting down bases is a toothless way to punish the start-up for not turning over usage data. Uber has claimed that the data amounts to a trade secret, Mr. Daus claims the company is trying to hide how unvaluable it really is before its valuation and everyone would probably agree that its been difficult for the TLC to police a company whose structure was basically designed to skirt its authority.
