The Presidents HaNassi Synagogue in Rehavia, Jerusalem

Posted By on December 31, 2014

This is a synagogue whose status has grown over time. Founded in 1932 as a small, single-story building to serve the residents of the then distinctly German-Jewish new neighborhood of Rehavia, it included Yitzhak Ben-Zvi, the second president of Israel, among its worshippers. Indeed, Ben-Zvi marked his election to the presidency in 1952 by reading the weekly portion from the Prophets on the Sabbath immediately afterwards.

One High Holiday service an American tourist turned up to find no available seats, whereupon the beadle indicated the one unoccupied place just by the president. On being called up to the Torah, the visitor expressed his gratitude in with a pledge of $250,000, which was ultimately used to complete the current magnificent building. When you visit, look for the plaque of the anonymous donor.

The original, distinguished congregation of leading Knesset figures, business people, and professionals of the first couple of generations of the State of Israel has long been shrinking with the aging of its founders, and the skyrocketing housing prices that pushed their children out of the district. But the seeds of the present, English-speaking-dominated membership were in place when the present three-storied structure opened its doors in 1972, and they formed the major part of the congregation by the 1990s.

Indeed, many were members of the Young Israel movement back in the States, which led to the Presidents Synagogue adding Young Israel to its nomenclature in 1997.

Your impression of a Sabbath morning visit to Presidents Synagogue will depend on which service you attend; downstairs (8:45) or upstairs (8:30).

Whatever you choose, get there as soon as possible seats run out. With a younger crowd, downstairs runs faster with fewer frills, but includes a short delivery - in Hebrew - from Rabbi Berel Wein. Overall however it is a standard Israeli service.

By contrast, the sanctuary upstairs tends to attract a more mature, larger English speaking crowd, some of whom know Rabbi Wein from his previous rabbinical positions in Miami and the tri-state area. The service and repertoire are the more formal modes reminiscent of the high church style of American and Anglo-Jewry.

Temple vandalized on Christmas

The members of Temple BNai Darom allow neighborhood children to play on their 3.6-acre open lot. Its all part of being a good neighbor.

But for years the Jewish synagogue has been the target of vandalism, a cost the small congregation cannot afford. Overhead night lights are destroyed at the synagogue, located at 49 Banyan Course, and theres been trespassing and destruction at the nearby cemetery.

On Christmas, no one was in the synagogue when someone used a BB gun to shoot out several of its stained glass windows and doors. Many of the metal balls rested on the ground outside the synagogue.

I think its a hate crime, said Robert Levenson, the temples president. And when things like this happen, its hard to keep going.

The temple has about 80 members. Most are elderly and many are leaving the area, so the congregation is dwindling, leaving little money left over to repair vandalism, Levenson said. He is still trying to determine the cost of the most recent damage, but it could be about $2,000.

The congregation is the second oldest established in Florida, Levenson said. This synagogue was built about 50 years ago to replace a decades-older structure, he said.

Levenson said he plans to offer a reward for information that would identify the person responsible.

This has been going on for a while, and we have to put a stop to it, he said.

Temple member Richard Gustafson said he is certain the building was singled out because it was a Jewish worship center.

WARSAW, Poland (JTA) A Polish Jewish foundation is planning to open a revamped Jewish museum in a reconstructed 17th century synagogue. The Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland is aiming to open the museum in the Great Synagogue in Leczna, in Lublin province, in 2016, with a focus on the towns Jewish community. The baroque synagogue was mostly destroyed during and after World War II. It was reconstructed in the 1950s and 60s, retaining the most important architectural elements of the former synagogue, including its wooden ceilings, the bimah and the Torah ark. Since 1966, the synagogue has housed a regional museum, which has in its collection some valuable Judaica.

In 2013, the synagogue was transferred to the Jewish community and placed under the foundations responsibility. The revamped museum could become part of the Chasidic Route the project implemented by the foundation tracing the Jewish communities of southeastern Poland. Twenty-eight communities have joined the project.
