Prosecutors: More charges possible in synagogue vandalism case

Posted By on November 7, 2014

The man accused of vandalizing a west suburban synagogue was indicted on armed violence and other charges Thursday afternoon, hours after his attorney had sought a reduction in his bond.

John White, 40, of Westmont, has been held in the DuPage County Jail in lieu of $5 million bond since he was charged Oct. 24 with hate crimes and other counts stemming from his alleged defacement Oct. 21 of Congregation Etz Chaim in Lombard.

At a bond hearing last month, Judge Michael Wolfe set the high bond at the request of prosecutors, who said police found a cache of weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition at White's residence. Prosecutors said White has a history of mental illness and access to more than $3 million in a trust account.

But Thursday, White's attorney, Joseph Solon, appeared before Judge George Bakalis seeking a bond reduction, and the judge seemed in agreement, saying a $5 million full-cash bond was "outrageous" based on the allegations against White.

But Assistant State's Attorney Joe Lindt asked the judge to wait until the case was brought before a grand jury. Later in the day, the grand jury handed up an indictment that charges White with a felony count of armed violence that would result in a minimum sentence of 10 years upon conviction, according to the DuPage County state's attorney's office. White also was indicted on counts of hate crime, institutional vandalism and weapons registration violation, the state's attorney's office said. No other information was available.

At the court hearing earlier, Bakalis said he would be "hard-pressed to continue a $5 million bond unless I hear something incredible."

"You may, your honor," Lindt replied.

Bakalis agreed to hold the bond hearing over until Monday.

Lombard police arrested White on Oct. 21 after a custodian at the synagogue at 1710 Highland Ave. reported that White was driving recklessly through the lot and over the grounds. He had broken out a number of windows and scrawled anti-Semitic slogans on the building, police said,

White allegedly brought an ax, a machete and other weapons with him. Police found the firearms when they executed a search warrant at the Westmont residence where White lives with his mother. She told police her son has a history of bipolar disorder, prosecutors said.

Synagogue: Police suspect sabotage, says DPO

Posted By on November 7, 2014

The Divisional Police Officer in charge of the Ikotun Egbe area of Lagos, CSP Haruna Alaba, has said the Nigeria Police is suspecting security sabotage as the cause of the September 12 Syangogue building collapse.

Giving testimony before the coroner, Magistrate O.A. Komolafe, on Thursday, Alaba said the peculiar manner in which the six-storey building collapsed has raised, among others, security concerns.

The police chief superintendent told the coroner that the State Criminal Investigations Department, Yaba, had already begun investigations, adding that one DSP Olusola Agoyi, was the officer assigned to the job.

He confirmed to the court that Agoyi had paid several visits to the collapsed site as part of his intelligent findings, adding that whenever he came he also reported at his (DPO) office in Ikotun.

Driving home his claim, Alaba recalled that before the collapse of the six-storey structure, his office had received reports of certain aircrafts flying at an unusually low altitude in the area and causing panic among the residents.

He stated further that with the security outfit put in place by the church, it was not impossible for a saboteur to have gained entrance to plant a bomb in the building.

The Nigeria Police has observed that there is need to investigate possible sabotage. The Nigeria Police has also observed the porous nature of the entrance and exit into the premises of the church as an issue that might have allowed possible sabotage with respect to the collapsed building, Alaba submitted.

The DPO went on to puncture the claim by the General Manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osayintolu, that the agency was impeded in carrying out rescue operation.

Flaying the NPF, Oke-Osanyintolu had said the mortality figure recorded would have been lesser, if the police had not failed in its duty of providing an enabling enviroment for lawful rescue operatives to work.

But Alaba stated that neither had Oke-Osanyitolu lodged any complaint of being assaulted nor did he hold any meeting with the police before his men were given access to the accident scene as he had claimed.

Temple Israel Sisterhood revives Jewish food festival

Posted By on November 7, 2014

11/6/2014 - West Side Leader

A reconstitution of the food festival celebrated for a few years nearly a decade ago, this years event is a celebration of Jewish food from many parts of the globe, said organizer Marsha Kreiger.

The art and food festival will take place Nov. 16 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Temple Israels new home, 91 Springside Drive.

At last years art festival, the Sisterhood sold pastries, Kreiger said.

The artists said we were missing out by not focusing on our ethnic culture with food, Kreiger said. So we are bringing back the Jewish food festival.

Food is a great medium for bringing people together, Kreiger said. She hopes members of the community will come to sample the food and enjoy the culture and leave with a better understanding of the people who made it.

I hope people will come in and meet us and get to know us, she added.

While Kreiger said people are most familiar with Jewish food of Eastern European origin, all food is influenced by the region in which it is prepared, she added.

Cooking blends with where you are, she said.

Religious cooking is no different, she said. Kreiger said she thought it was important to include Sephardic foods those with Middle Eastern, North African and Spanish influences.

Susannah Heschel: What Does It Mean to be Religious in an Age of Neoliberalism?

Posted By on November 7, 2014

November 4, 2014

Susannah Heschel comes from a long line of Jewish thinkers, teachers, scholars and rabbis. Her grandfather served the poor in Warsaw; her father, Abraham Joshua Heschel, marched with Martin Luther King Jr.

She continues the family tradition as a scholar, focusing on Jewish-Christian relations in Germany during the 19th and 20th centuries, the history of biblical scholarship and the history of anti-Semitism.

The Eli Black Professor of Jewish Studies at Dartmouth College, she is the author and editor of numerous books, including Abraham Geiger and the Jewish Jesus, which won a National Jewish Book Award and Germanys Geiger Prize, and The Aryan Jesus: Christian Theologians and the Bible in Nazi Germany.

She also edited a book of her fathers essays called Moral Grandeur and Spiritual Audacity: Essays of Abraham Joshua Heschel.

Heschel spoke with Faith & Leadership while at Duke to give a talk on her fathers legacy as a human rights activist and his archives, which have recently opened in the universitys Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library. The following is an edited transcript.

Q: Explain a little bit about the European Jewish tradition from which your family came.

My father was born in Warsaw to a Hasidic family, a pietistic family. He was the son of very distinguished Hasidic rebbes, who constituted a kind of royalty within Jewish life. Its a tradition of intense prayer and cultivation of the inner self, but also how you treat other people.

But my grandfather left that world and took a position in one of the most impoverished Jewish neighborhoods in Warsaw. I think that tells you something about the religious commitments of my family and the political commitments.

Its part of the family tradition: to be religious means to be open to human beings from all kinds of backgrounds, to be respectful of them and to care for them. To care for those who are impoverished, who are victims of injustice that pervades societies.
