Synagogue to host family farm event

Posted By on October 14, 2014

Congregation Bnai Israel of Rumson (CBI) will host a day of old-fashioned family entertainment from noon to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 26 at Congress Hill Farm, 118 Federal Road, Monroe.

The event will take place rain or shine, and feature a lineup of activities the whole family can enjoy, including a kosher-style barbecue, outdoor sports, hayrides, nature trails for walking/biking, pony rides, handson feeding and grooming of horses, a zipline, outdoor rope course and more.

Robyn Etzler, co-chair of CBIs membership committee, said in a press release, We are looking forward to having a day to just mingle and relax with our members, friends and neighbors. Congress Hills Farm is a 200- acre hidden gem, and I am thrilled that everyone will be able to experience this unique setting this fall.

Co-chair Lester Mallet added that while it is a family day, adults without kids or grandkids will enjoy it, as well.

Congress Hill Farm is fascinating. ... We will have guided tours of the facilities and grounds as well as a talk about vegetable gardening, he said.

Registration is required by Oct. 23. The cost is $18 per family for CBI members and $36 for nonmember families.

Congressional and Senate candidates debate at University Synagogue

University Synagogue was the host Oct. 12 for debates in two races for the Nov. 4 election one between Elan Carr and Ted Lieu, running for the 33rd Congressional District seat, and another between Sandra Fluke and Ben Allen, who are vying for the California 26th state Senate seat. In addition, representing one side of the race for Los Angeles Countys 3rd District supervisor, candidate Bobby Shriver delivered remarks, while his opponent, Sheila Kuehl, appeared via a pre-recorded video message.

The triple-header featured the candidates discussing a range of issues both national and local, from Israels national security to Los Angeles transportation system, as well as reforming the United States immigration system and ensuring there is no asbestos in Santa Monica and Malibu schools.

Mirror Media Group, whose holdings include the Santa Monica Mirror, Brentwood News and Century City News, sponsored the event, which drew upward of 200 people.

The winners of at least two of the races will have big Jewish shoes to fill. Carr and Lieu are vying to succeed Rep. Henry Waxman, who has served 40 years in the seat, while Shriver and Kuehl are squaring off to succeed Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, who is currently in his fifth term, the maximum allowed.

The debate between Carr and Lieu kicked off the afternoon, Brentwood News Editor Jeff Hall serving as moderator. The candidates discussed national security, immigration, education, employment and a range of other issues, seeking to distinguish themselves from one another.

The candidates belong to opposing parties Carr, who is Jewish, is a Republican; and Lieu (who is not Jewish) is a Democrat but, last week, the two mens remarks underscored what they have in common: Both are pro-Israel and both are frustrated by the partisan politics in the House of Representatives, among other grievances.

Carr has family ties to Israel. He also served in Iraq in 2003 as a member of the U.S. military. He said he would be more than a reliable vote in Congress on Israel issues: When I see the exposure to danger that Israel is facing today it terrifies me, Carr said. He described himself as someone who has background experience with Israel and is familiar with threats facing the country today.

Lieu promised to fight against existential threats to Israel and the United States. He set himself apart from Carrs pro-military credentials by saying he is skeptical of American military intervention, adding that the situation in Libya today is more precarious than it was prior to the deployment of troops there by the United States and its allies following the Arab Spring uprisings. He also cited how American intervention in Iraq under the George W. Bush administration has left the country worse off than it was before.

During the Q-and-A portion, an audience member question about the legalization of marijuana spotlighted another difference between the two congressional candidates.

Golfer Pressel raises $3 million for breast cancer research

Posted By on October 14, 2014

Jewish pro golfer Morgan Pressel of Boca Raton is not only an elite golfer on the women's pro golf circuit, but is also a leader for breast cancer research over the past seven years.

Pressel has raised over $3.4 million through her annual Morgan Pressel and Friends pro-am golf tournament each January at the St. Andrews Country Club where she resides.

The money raised through the Morgan Pressel Foundation has benefited thousands of women through the founding last year of the Morgan Pressel Center For Cancer Genetics at Boca Raton Regional Hospital.

"Men and women now can be tested through genetics for breast, colon and ovarian cancer at the center, and we had more than doubled the number of people who have been tested, compared to 2013," said Dr. Louise Morrell, medical director of the Lynn Cancer Institute.

Morrell has dedicated more than 25 years to cancer genetics research and acknowledges that Ashkenazi (Eastern European origin) Jewish women are especially prone to breast and ovarian cancers.

"The mutation of the BRCA gene 1 and BRCA gene 2 is extremely important among Ashkenazi Jewish women to identify early for cancer," said Dr. Morrell.

Even men can be at risk for breast cancer. Bob Weaver, a well-known television weatherman at NBC 6, died of breast cancer in 2006.

Morrell acknowledges that Pressel has lent much more than her name and money to cancer research.

"Morgan has made frequent visits to patients at the center and has inspired both patients and donors by her passion for raising funds for cancer research."

Pressel lost her mother, Kathy Krickstein Pressel, who died of breast cancer at age 43 in 2003, when Morgan was 15. In her memory, Pressel has also funded the Kathy Krickstein Mammovan, a mobile van that provides mammograms examination to women throughout Palm Beach County.
