Joan Rivers' Funeral Sunday at New York Synagogue

Posted By on September 5, 2014

Funeral services for Joan Rivers will be Sunday at Temple Emanu-El in New York City, the synagogue said. Details, including what time services would be held and whether the public would be admitted, weren't immediately disclosed.

Rivers, a member of the Reform congregation, died Thursday at age 81, said her daughter, Melissa Rivers. in her 2012 book "I Hate Everyone ... Starting With Me," Joan Rivers wrote that she wanted her funeral to be "a huge showbiz affair with lights, cameras, action. I don't want some rabbi rambling on; I want Meryl Streep crying, in five different accents. ... And I want a wind machine so that even in my casket my hair is blowing just like Beyonce's."

Safra: The sound of coexistence at Berkeleys Ashkenaz

If only coexistence was as easy in the Holy Land as it is on the bandstand. The East Bay ensemble Safra, which makes its Ashkenaz debut on Sunday, has developed a sumptuous body of Sephardic music drawn from North Africas intermingled musical traditions, combining Hebrew lyrics, Middle Eastern instrumentation, and popular melodies from the Middle East and beyond. The bands vision isnt so much utopian as a refraction of an increasingly riven regions shared cultural heritage.

Launched in early 2013 by two Berkeleyans, vocalist Eliana Kissner and oud player John Ehrlich, Safra quickly took shape with the dynamic percussion tandem of Debbie Fier on dumbek, riqq and bendir, and

Susie Goldenstein on dumbek and riqq. For Sundays show, the quartet will be joined onviolin, oud and percussion by the Bay Areas great Moroccan musician Bouchaib Abdelhadi, a master of cross-cultural collaborations (Bruce Bierman teaches Yemenite dance before the concert).

Much of Safras music is drawn from Ehrlichs last trove of cassettes documenting rare recordings made around the Arab world. The zippiest songs that we find, the ones people really enjoy, are pizmonim, songs in Hebrew written to fit well known Arabic, Turkish or Persian folk melodies, Ehrlich says.

Not so much prayers as praise songs for God, pizmonim were often works commissioned to celebrate a wedding, bris or bar mitzvah. The music flourished in the ancient Jewish communities of Aleppo, Baghdad, Cairo, Smyrna, and the Maghreb, though the tradition has continued after political upheaval forced those communities to flee to Israel.

Some of our melodies are taken from Arabic pop songs of the 20th century, Kissner says. These songs arent some secretive borrowing. They come from the larger history of Jews in Arab countries, and some of them were written by living composers in Israel.

The bands origins can be traced to the copyroom at Congregation Netivot Shalom, which is where Ehrlich and Kissner first met (several years earlier Ehrlich encountered his future wife at the temple, so who needs J-Date and Craigslist?).

A long-time student of the oud, the pear-shaped Middle Eastern lute, he was on the lookout for new musical collaborators after the breakup his band Zaatar, which specialized in the music of Middle Eastern Jewish (or Mizrahi) cultures.

At the time I was just kind of scanning the horizons to see who was out there, says Ehrlich, who works for the city of Albanys Building Division. Its really about finding a lead singer, thats the most challenging component. The first or second time Eliana and I got together to play we realized we had similar interests and vision. Both really wanted to put together a professional quality working ensemble.

Despite advances, ovarian cancer survival rates refuse to budge

Posted By on September 5, 2014

Ovarian cancer is often called silent because there are usually only vague symptoms early on. Others insist there are clear signs if you know what to watch for, such as abdominal bloating, pelvic pain and extreme fatigue.

Most experts say there is no reliable screening test for ovarian cancer. But some advocacy groups tell women to demand CA125 testing if they suspect ovarian cancer. This is a blood test used to monitor women for the cancer's return during and after treatment. It is not approved for primary screening.

Some facts are not in dispute. According to the American Cancer Society, nearly 22,000 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year and more than 14,000 will die of the disease. More than 70 percent of women with ovarian cancer had advanced disease when they were diagnosed, meaning the cancer had already spread beyond the ovaries. That fact makes this the most lethal gynecologic cancer in the United States.

The Times asked Dr. Mitchel Hoffman for a medical update on ovarian cancer detection and treatment. Hoffman is a professor of gynecologic oncology at USF Health and Tampa General Hospital, and has been treating women with gynecologic cancers for more than 30 years.

What's going on in the search for a screening test?

We haven't made much progress and there is still no reliable test. This is a difficult cancer to find early because there's no prolonged precancerous phase, like with cervical cancer, where we can test for and remove abnormal cells or tissue, and prevent the development of cancer. By the time the cellular changes take place that make ovarian a detectable cancer, the disease is beyond the ovaries and has invaded the abdomen and other organs. Research continues but I'm afraid we may find that this cancer just isn't amenable to screening.

Yet strides have been made in prevention?

Because of advances in genetic testing, we can now identify women at high risk for ovarian cancer: Those with the BRCA-1 or BRCA-2 gene; also, women with a strong family history, meaning ovarian cancer in their mother and/or a sister; and those of certain ancestry are also at high risk, such as Ashkenazi Jewish women. We can offer them surgical removal of the ovaries. We've also learned that ovarian cancer may start in the fallopian tubes, so removing the tubes may also be protective.

How has treatment changed?

In the past 10 years we've learned that aggressive surgery in the abdomen to remove everything that looks like a tumor extends survival. The surgery takes hours, but we have to be very thorough or patients don't do very well.
