$5 million bond in vandalism of Lombard synagogue

Posted By on October 27, 2014

A Westmont man with a reported history of mental illness who authorities said had a cache of weapons and "thousands of rounds" of ammunition at his home was charged Friday with vandalizing aLombard synagogue.

John White, 40, of Tartan Lakes Drive, was ordered held in lieu of $5 million bail after being charged with a hate crime, criminal damage to property, institutional vandalism and having no valid firearms owner's identification card.

White was taken into custody Tuesday after Lombard police found him driving his car recklessly over the grounds and shrubs at the Congregation Etz Chaim synagogue, 1710 Highland Ave. The synagogue's custodian alerted police to the vandalism, prosecutors said.

White had reportedly written a hateful message in pencil on the building and had broken seven windows with a lantern he'd found on the property, DuPage County Assistant State's Attorney Enza LaMonica said in court Friday.

The prosecutor said White had brought a hatchet, a machete, an ax and a knife with him and left them in the front entrance of the synagogue. Inside his car, police found gun targets, rat poison, brass knuckles and a hateful note, LaMonica told Judge Michael Wolfe.

Police later executed a search warrant at White's residence where he lives with his mother. Under a stairwell, they found thousands of rounds of ammunition, and recovered a rifle, shotgun and four handguns, authorities said.

LaMonica said police spoke to White's mother, who said he has a history of bipolar disorder but is usually fine if he takes his medication.

White has been arrested several times on drug charges, the prosecutor told the judge, and as well as charges of DUI and not having a valid firearm owner's identification card.

The judge set an unusually high full-cash bond at the request of prosecutors, who said White told police he had access to $3.5 million in a trust fund. When the judge told White he would need the entire $5 million in cash to post bail, White replied, "I don't have access to that quantity of money."

If White were able to post bail, he would be outfitted with a GPS monitoring device and would have to surrender any firearms not already in police possession. The judge also told White that he could not go near the synagogue.

Man in custody after reports of vandalism at Lombard synagogue

Posted By on October 27, 2014

Employees and clergy at a synagogue in Lombard were still a bit shaken Wednesday after the west suburban temple was vandalized in an apparent hate crime.

"Theyre still a bit rattled," said Rabbi Andrea Cosnowsky of Congregation Etz Chaim, 1710 S. Highland Ave., on Wednesday.

She said several employees were in the synagogue about 7:30 p.m. when they heard the sound of glass breaking as windows were smashed. They immediately called 911. Police responded and took a 40-year-old Westmont man into custody, but charges have not yet been filed, according to law enforcement agencies.

The man allegedly broke a number of large glass windows and wrote graffiti on the exterior, according to police. The man also drove around the synagogue'sparking lot and onto the grass along Highland Avenue before crashing into bushes, police said.

Cosnowsky said the man was arrested when he was still breaking windows. They caught him red-handed.

She said the graffiti on the building was not symbols. It was prejudiced words.

She said none of the employees had any interaction with the man.

In an emailed statement, Cosnowsky said the Congregation Etz Chaim condemns the recent act of vandalism on our congregational building and the apparent bigotry behind it.

She said congregations from churches of other denominations in Lombard have offered their support.

We stand together with Congregation Etz Chaim with respect and condemn these acts of hatred and antagonism against any religion, said Sabet Siddiqui, a representative of Masjid-Ul-Haqq Mosque in Lombard.

$5M bond for man charged with vandalizing Lombard synagogue

Posted By on October 27, 2014

WHEATON, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A west suburban man accused of vandalizing a Lombard synagogue on Tuesday has been ordered held on a $5 million bond.

John White, 40, is charged with one count each of committing a hate crime, criminal damage to property, possessing a firearm without an FOID card and institutional vandalism, all felonies, the DuPage County state's attorney's office said.

About 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Lombard police responded to a 911 call about a disturbance at Etz Chaim Synagogue at 1710 S. Highland Ave., a statement from prosecutors said.

They found White driving recklessly all over the synagogue property, both on and off the pavement, prosecutors claim. Seven of the synagogue's windows had been smashed.

White was arrested, and a search of his home turned up thousands of rounds of ammunition, a shotgun, rifle and four handguns, police said.

The charges against Mr. White are extremely serious, State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in the statement. Hate crimes have a devastating effect not only on the victims themselves, but on the entire community.

DuPage County is built on the strengths of our communities and an attack on a religious institution is considered an attack against the entire community.

White, of the 0 to 100 block of Tartan Lakes Drive in Westmont, was ordered held on a $5 million cash bond Friday, the state's attorney's office said.

He will next appear in court Nov. 17 in Wheaton.

The Hessed Ve-Rahamim Synagogue in Nachlaot, Jerusalem

Posted By on October 27, 2014

Jerusalem is estimated to possess some 200 churches, 40 mosques, and well over 1,000 synagogues. Most Jewish places of worship in the city are small, easy to miss, and reflect the character of their immediate neighborhoods. Most of the synagogues are also Sephardi.

Whereas centrally-located Ashkenazi synagogues tend to be large in size and doughty in presence, their Sephardi counterparts tend to be more restrained in decor, with a warm, relaxed intimacy, and a deep-seated pride in their cultural identity and traditions. They are also more ubiquitous: choose at random a Jerusalem synagogue and it is most likely to be Sephardi.

Those in the more-than-a-century-old district of Nachlaot are especially revered as founder-Sephardi synagogues in the New City. Most continue have their small but devoted hard-core cohorts who keep the Sabbath and weekday services well-above the minimum quorum of the ten males required for full services.

Their numbers rise exponentially during the Selichot period in the 40-day penitential period preceding Yom Kippur, and the rising inflows of visitors and tourists packs out their sanctuaries in the pre-dawn hours. These pilgrims happily trade a good nights sleep for the unforgettable Sephardi prayer-fervor and traditional melodies. And there is also the sense of being a latter-day hanger-on to the tradition of the beadles of yesteryears pre-dawn watch knocking on the doors to round up the locals to prayer. Visitors are welcome and you might want to visit more than one, for the experience. Services are slow-paced enough for a well-seasoned hopper to manage half-a-dozen on a Shabbat morning, and more than a couple on Friday night.

But if youve only one to choose from, consider the richly-decorated Hessed Ve-Rahamim ("kindness and mercy") Synagogue on HaCarmel Street, in central Jerusalem.

Like most places of worship in the neighborhood, it follows the authentic Sephardi Jerusalem liturgy and full-throated singing. Its Iraqi-accented origin is best tasted on Simchat Torah with the kubbeh metugan (fried cracked-wheat dish) stuffed with mincemeat, hard-boiled eggs, and pickled cucumbers, served after the morning service.

In the gathering dusk and from a little distance, its iron-hammered logos of the Twelve Tribes and the Eshet Chayil (Woman of Valor) prayer evoke the facade of the house of the Gingerbread Man an impression that is not entirely misleading, as some 90 years ago the building was a pub.

According to local lore, Jewish butcher Isaac Emosa changed all that by buttonholing the owner with 10 sterling in exchange for an instant quit.

Today, services are led by his descendant, the Cantor Mori Emosa whose utterly-precise cantillation is operatic aria, and who simultaneously conveys the meanings of the weekly Reading of the Law. The family also continues to ensure that the same Saturday morning service ends with burekas - savory pastries - for all worshippers.
