Synagogue: Christian youths call for thorough investigation

Posted By on October 13, 2014

The Coalition of Christian Youth Groups in Nigeria has called for a thorough investigation into the collapse of a hostel building at the Synagogue Church of All Nations.

The youth group at a press conference in Osogbo on Monday said that they gathered from investigation that the hostel did not collapse but was demolished.

The National President of the group, Mr. Seyi Bamidele, said that it was curious that the building collapsed some moments after an aircraft hovered on it at a low altitude.

He said that the close circuit camera of the church captured the aircraft and its strange movement on the building.

He said, Another strange occurrence is that upon visitation to the site of the collapsed building, except for supporting pillars, no traces of floor slabs were found in the debris. All vanished with the collapse. This is peculiar to controlled demolished buildings.

Apart from the aircraft, The oral testimony of a loud bang sound reminiscent of a bombing scene was heard before the collapse.

The CCTV footage of the incident showed a clear cut prove of controlled demolition. The controlled demolition of the Bank of Industry building on Lagos Island should still be freshin the mind of those of us who were physically present or watched it via electronic media.

The demolition of the BOI building portray a close semblance to that of the SCOAN guest house building.

Bamidele said that some of the detractors of Prophet T.B Joshua had started using the sad incident to tarnish his image. He said based on this, the Christian youths wanted relevant agencies to ensure that thorough investigation was carried out to unravel what caused the collapse.

The group also condemned the attempt by some people to rubbish the image of the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor on the seizure of cash meant to purchase arms and ammunition in South Africa.

Making Strides' doctor talks about no family history

Posted By on October 13, 2014

As a breast health specialist at West Boca Diagnostic Imaging, it was a natural fit for Dr. Cheryl Moss-Mellman to step into the role as chairwoman for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer South Palm Beach.

The American Cancer Society's walk takes place at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 25 from the city's Mizner Park Amphitheater. West Boca Medical Center is a silver sponsor, committing to raise at least $2,500, the hospital's CEO Mitch Feldman announced last month.

Moss-Mellman recently talked about the results of a study on breast and ovarian cancer in Jewish women with an Ashkenazi (French, German or Eastern European) background. The study found they had high rates of these cancers, even when there was no family history. The findings were seen as a call for universal testing of this population.

The study is called "Population-based screening for breast and ovarian cancer risk due to BRCA1 and BRCA2." An abstract was provided by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America: pnas.org/content/111/39/14205.abstract.

Were you surprised by this outcome?

With the Ashkenazi Jewish population, the frequency of being a BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene carrier occurs in one out of 40 women. It's important to look at the individual family. Maybe someone is an only child with no aunts and uncles. Maybe in a small family there are more males. [BRCA1 and BRCA 2 mutations increase the risk of female breast and ovarian cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute].

Why does that make a difference?

The reason we see it in such high frequency is when Jews living in shtetls [Jewish villages] or isolated populations were marrying their cousins. If there is a mutation, once you start intermarrying, that defect in the DNA will reproduce in that population.

Are you already looking for these genes in your practice?

The most important thing is having a thorough view of the family history. That will be your strongest predictor of who has a higher likelihood of having a BRCA mutation. It can be passed down from either side, and I generally try to get at least three generations.

Molly Antopols debut short story collection, The Un-Americans, tells stories of Jews divided by geography but united by history. (Courtesy Molly Antopol)

A Jewish-American dry cleaner who who hadnt thought much about his grandfathers escape from the Cossacks in Kiev falls in love with a client who turns out to be from Kiev.

A grandmother in New York one day tells her granddaughter how she fled the Nazis through a sewer tunnel when she was a child, and how her quiet grandfather led the equally filthy teenage resistance group she joined.

These are some of the story lines from Molly Antopols short story collection The Un-Americans, long-listed for the National Books Awards.

The collection spans as the New York Times put it the entire Ashkenazi Jewish universe, from New York to Belarus to Israel, with ancestors watching from their graves as another writes.
