Growing strong: Maimonides Academy to open new building for grades three through eight

After a decade of dreaming, the staff at Maimonides Academy, an Orthodox Sephardic day school, is nearly ready to make its longtime vision come true and open a new building.

The 50,000-square-foot, four-story structure which cost about $20 million, according to Rabbi Aharon Wilk, Maimonides principal is slated to open on La Cienega Boulevard near the Beverly Center in January. It will house a total of about 360 children in grades three through eight.

The building became necessary as the school ran out of room to enroll new applicants. Now it can continue to grow, said Rabbi Baruch Kupfer, who has been executive director of Maimonides Academy for more than 25 years.

Jewish children need a Jewish school to go to. They deserve the proper facilities they would get in other places and a modern education that will prepare them for the world outside. Our children deserve nothing else, he said.

The school currently has two locations: The one on Huntley Drive is for preschool through third grade, while a West Pico Boulevard site is home to students in fourth through eighth grade. In January, the Pico outpost will close, but the Huntley location will stay open. The third-graders there will be transferred to the new building.

Maimonides Academy was founded in 1968, and started with fewer than 15 students in different rooms at Sephardic Magen David Synagogue, when it was located on Melrose Avenue. Over time, it has blossomed into an institution that serves more than 260 families and 500 students.

Kupfer said that the renovation, funded by families and private donors, hasnt happened until now because of zoning problems. Weve been able to resolve them, he said.

Sketch of the new library

The new building will contain two science labs, a synagogue with a separate beit midrash (house of study) for havruta Torah study and a sports center. There will be outdoor areas on the different levels, a music center, an art studio, a library, a dining hall and two large parking lots that can hold up to 80 cars total. Theres also going to be a Holocaust Memorial Hall, an Israel Independence Hall, an atrium garden and a roof terrace.

Jerusalem Elects Ashkenazi and Sephardi Chief Rabbis

City Has Not Had Chief Rabbi Since 2003 By JTA

Published October 21, 2014.

The Jerusalem City Council elected two new chief rabbis, including Rabbi Shlomo Amar, the former chief rabbi of Israel.

Amar was tapped as the citys Sephardi chief rabbi on Tuesday evening. Rabbi Aryeh Stern was picked as the Ashkenazi chief rabbi. Both had the support of Mayor Nir Barkat.

Stern is a modern Orthodox rabbi and was backed by the Jewish Home party. Amar had the backing of the Shas party.

The city has not had a chief rabbi since 2003.

It is in my intention to serve as the rabbi of all Jerusalemites: secular, modern Orthodox and haredi alike, Stern said in a statement following the announcement of his election. The Jerusalem Rabbinate is a great merit, but it also comprises a hefty responsibility. I will make sure that the religious services will become accessible and friendly, and will serve as an outstanding model for all of the other rabbinates in Israel.

Mea Culpa: Social Media Apology Do's and Don'ts

Posted By on October 22, 2014

When DiGiorno tweeted, "You had pizza. #WhyIStayed," Twitter lit up with criticism of the brand.

The hashtag "WhyIStayed" is associated with domestic violence.

In response to the firestorm its tweet unleashed, DiGiorno peppered its Twitter feed with apology after apology, all of them essentially like this: "A million apologies. Did not read what the hashtag was about before posting."

The furor around DiGiorno's gaffe and the company's extensive blast of apologies demonstrate how vital it is to hone one's ability to use social media to apologize for mistakes.

"Social media apologies are important, as brands don't want to seem impervious to their mistakes," said Jarone Ashkenazi, account manager with PMBC Group.

"When a mistake arises, the issue is amplified online, so brands must come up with a dignified and appropriate apology for mistakes they make," he told CRM Buyer. "Furthermore, a social media apology is important because it will protect the brand's image."

Apologies are a central part of human communication. They smooth over wrongs and facilitate the kinds of changes that are necessary to keep relationships functional -- whether those relationships are personal or professional. In many ways, personal and professional apologies can be similar.

"A good apology says what it was you did wrong," said Susan McCarthy, cofounder of SorryWatch.

"It doesn't' say 'I'm sorry for those unfortunate events.' It doesn't dance around, saying the circumstances are regrettable. Maybe there should be an explanation, but there shouldn't be a long explanation about how the company is a victim," she told CRM Buyer. "You should say how it won't happen again."

SorryWatch -- a website dedicated to documenting public apologies -- was started by McCarthy and Marjorie Ingall to track both effective and ineffective apologies.

What is Jewish about breast cancer? Sharsheret spreads message about risk

Posted By on October 22, 2014

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -

When a young Jewish woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States, an organization founded more than a decade ago is ready to help.

Rochelle Shoretz, who has been living with breast cancer for 13 years, wanted to make sure that other women in her shoes would not feel alone. She also wanted to spread information about the health risks the Jewish community faces.

The Center for Disease Control reports two percent of Ashkenazi Jews carry one of the specific mutations associated with hereditary breast cancer. But not enough people know that.

Briana Schwarz is helping her spread the message in Florida. In May, the organization marked a year of activism in Florida, and Shoretz was in town to celebrate. And October 12, Sharsheret held their Rock N' Run event in Pinecrest.

ACTIVE IN FLORIDA

October is a busy month for Schwarz. On Wednesday night, she will be talking about breast cancer at Temple Beth Torah in North Miami Beach.

And on Tuesday night, she was at Miami Beach Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery Center talking about how the disease affects the Jewish community in front of about 30 people.

Jewish families are significantly more susceptible to hereditary breast cancer and ovarian cancer, she said.

In the regular population only 1 in 345 people carry that breast cancer gene mutation, but in Ashkenazi Jewish families 1 in 40 carry BRCA, a genetic mutation that increases the risk for breast and ovarian cancer.
