The danger of just talking

Posted By on October 4, 2014

Its out of my mouth before I know Ive said it. Only right afterward do I recognize the feeling of giving in to the urge to say something I shouldnt, something that is mean, judgmental or just not mine to tell. When I hear my husband or a friend repeating what I shouldnt have said, I protest: No, no, I was just talking. I didnt mean it.

Torah cautions the children of Israel in Leviticus 19:16 not to be tale-bearers. Talmud considers lashon harah, which means evil tongue and refers to gossip or slander, to be as bad as murder, adultery and idol worship combined. Speaking negatively of others even when what you say is true or listening to someone else speak negatively without protesting is a sure way to lose your place in the olam habah, the world to come.

If you dont have something nice to say, come sit by me is not what Jewish educators call the Jewish Way. Its good to be reminded of this as we engage in self-reflection during the High Holy Days.

Rabbi Gabriel Botnick of Temple Aliyah in Woodland Hills likes to tell the Chasidic tale about a man asking his rabbi how to repair damage caused by malicious gossip. The rabbi tells the man to take a pillow up on the roof, shake out all the feathers and then gather them all in again. Like the feathers, words let loose cant be called back. (Some rabbis teach that, to be on the safe side, we shouldnt talk about other people at all.)

Words are powerful in Jewish thinking. The world itself was created with them. The Targum Jonathan (an Aramaic translation of Torah) calls the very breath that made the first human come alive a speaking spirit. We have a holy book and a holy language. Discussion, between study partners or over centuries, is at the heart of our spiritual practice. Vows of silence are rare in Jewish tradition.

In the ultra-Orthodox world, where children learn to be very careful about lashon harah, this can create confusion about telling. Is it OK to report a bully? Someone in power being inappropriate? In more liberal circles, there is a caution about who can use what language. Some words are off-limits for some people. All denominations recognize the power of words and struggle with how to use them for good.

So how am I supposed to know when I am using them for good? My hunger to be in the know, whether its mean, judgmental or just the urge to share a good story, often sweeps right over my urge to be kind, modest or temperate.

The 19th-century Lithuanian rabbi Israel Meir Kagan, known as the Chofetz Chaim, Hebrew for desires life as in the words from Psalm 34: Who is the person who desires life and loves days that he may see the good? Guard your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit made a career of writing about issues of lashon harah.

What if you are forced to do it? What if you will lose money if you dont do it? What if you feel really, really certain someone will benefit from hearing what you have to say?

Roxborough synagogue mourns death of murdered cantor

Posted By on October 4, 2014

EAST MOUNT AIRY --

Authorities say 54-year-old Ronald Fischman was attacked late Tuesday night at his residence on the 200 block of East Phil Ellena Street.

"It's had a devastating impact on the congregation," said David Pivar, Mishkan Shalom president.

Fischman was a long-term member and cantor at Mishkan Shalom synagogue in Roxborough.

Around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday night, police say 33-year-old Jonathan Williams, Fischman's former houseguest, broke into the home and made his way to a second floor bedroom.

Police say Fischman saw the suspect and confronted him and that's when Williams stabbed him in the neck and back then ran off.

Williams was arrested after he returned to the scene. He now faces murder and related offenses.

Police say Williams broke in looking to kill his boyfriend who Fischman was permitting to live there.

"He was a man of very modest means and yet he opened his home to two people who had even bigger financial struggles, as I understand it," said Pivar.

The Mishkan Shalom synagogue is shocked and deeply grieved. Members will say prayers for Fischman and his family at Friday's Yom Kippur services.

Synagogue: Families shun LASUTHs DNA sample centre

The Lagos State University Teaching Hospitals Department of Pathology and Forensic Medicine where families of the Synagogue building collapses victims have been directed to give DNA samples has everything laid out to welcome the expected large number of families. But only a handful of them has showed up.

The departments preparation for a likelihood of being overwhelmed by expectant families was obvious when our correspondent visited as it had set up canopies and chairs as counselling station outside the building.

Our correspondent, who visited the hospital on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, saw none of the families come in. The canopies set up outside the department had remained unused ever since.

But an official told our correspondent that on Monday, which was the first day, that few of the families came to give samples. None of them included South Africans though.

The department had earlier announced that families could come in as from last Monday to give samples which would help identify their loved ones.

The Lagos States Chief Forensic Pathologist and Vice Chancellor of the Lagos State University, Prof. John Obafunwa, could not answer questions on this issue on the phone.

Efforts to speak with him in his office also proved abortive as a result of his schedule.

Death toll in the September 12, 2014 collapse of a six-storey guest house at the Synagogue Church of All Nations was put at 115 with 84 of them being South Africans.

Rescue officials had said that the DNA tests would take at least two months.

At Yom Kippur services, celebrity sightings are common

Posted By on October 4, 2014

While the Jewish world emulates the angels today by wearing white, a meeting with the Almighty would be amazing.

But a celeb sighting at synagogue? Spiritual nirvana.

Yom Kippur, the solemn but joyous Day of Atonement, is the spiritual crescendo of a 10-day period known as the Days of Repentance.

And with back-to-back services all day long a temple marathon, coupled with abstention from eating and drinking, putting any discomfort during juice fast to shame a little distraction (aside from the errant thoughts of a bacon cheeseburger amid our 25-hour fast), is welcome.

So when NYCs big machers stream into synagogue today, rabbis might have to work extra hard to command full attention. Heres whos been sighted:

On the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, the Upper West Side funny guy must forgo his two favorite things as of late: coffee and cars at least for the next 25 hours of Yom Kippur, which bans all work (yes, that means driving) and abstaining from food and drink.

The comedian reportedly attended services a few years back at Bnai Jeshurun, where congregants of the Upper West Side shul were probably wondering if hed break out the famous Pez dispenser (a la Seinfeld) and make light of the seriousness of the day.

But forget about crashing his legendary break-fast feasts. No ones getting past his doorman.

Israel imposes strict closures across Palestine for Yom Kippur

Posted By on October 4, 2014

Israeli authorities are imposing wide-ranging closures on the West Bank and Gaza throughout the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, limiting the movement of Palestinians just as the Islamic Eid al-Adha festival begins. The closures began at midnight on Thursday and last until Saturday midnight, massively limiting the movement of all Palestinians in and out of the West Bank and Gaza Strip for the duration of the holiday. The only possible exceptions that could be made, an Israeli military statement said, would be for humanitarian and medical needs, although the closure of government offices during the same time could present difficulties to those seeking to utilize the exceptions. Israel routinely seals the Palestinian territories during Jewish holidays, depriving Palestinians of the freedom of movement and cutting them off from family and work inside Israel. This year's closure, however, is particularly controversial, as the somber Yom Kippur day of repentance overlaps with the joyous Eid al-Adha festival, celebrated by millions of Palestinian Muslims
