BLOOMFIELD Over the years Mark Goldberg has pondered the line in the Seder prayer that says "All who are hungry, come and eat."
"I've often thought about that line..if there was a knock on the door," he said. "You say it but you don't really mean it."
But now Golderg and the Beth Hillel Synagogue do mean it and are inviting people of all faiths and those who are just hungry to a freedom-hunger Seder Sunday.
"The idea is that instead of just saying it, let's practice it," Golberg said. "We're inviting those who are in need in for a free meal, Seder-style."
Guests will be treated to a kosher, yeast- and dairy-free meal of chicken pot pie topped with mashed potatoes instead of crust and an introduction to the history and traditions of the Seder.
"We'll go through it with them and help them understand and remove the mystique," he said. "It's just a celebration of freedom. That's what the holiday is all about.".
Golberg said he brought the idea two the synagogue's board last year without success. But in November an interfaith Thanksgiving gathering at Beth Hillel was a well-attended success, prompting Goldberg to bring it up to the board again and got approval.
Goldberg said he's cooking for 50 but is hopeful for more. And if it's a success, he plans to make it an annual event.
"We'll have plenty of food," said Rabbi Gary Atkins. "They don't have to be poor or hungry to come, but that's who we're trying to reach.
Atkins, said the event is also part of the "fundamental message of Passover that sometimes gets overlooked," and added that it will also help the synagogue to continue to connect with the interfaith community.

When they committed suicide in his bunker at the end of the Second World War, Eva Braun had been Adolf Hitlers mistress for more than 12 years and his wife for a mere 40 hours.
It seems, however, that despite their time together, she may have kept a crucial family secret from the Fuhrer.
For the man who exterminated millions of Jews in the war may have been in love with a woman with Jewish ancestry.
DNA analysis of hair found on a brush that belonged to her seems to show a link through her maternal line, it emerged yesterday.
Hitler kept Miss Braun, who was 23 years his junior and a teenager when she first met him, largely hidden away at his Alpine residence, the Berghof.
Scientists tested hair samples which are said to have come from a hairbrush used by Braun and discovered at Hitlers mountain retreat.
They found a particular sequence within the DNA, which had been passed down the maternal line the haplogroup N1b1 which it is claimed is strongly associated with Ashkenazi Jews, who make up around 80 per cent of the global Jewish population.

Eva Braun, who married Nazi leader Adolf Hitler hours before the pair committed suicide in 1945, was of Jewish descent, according to DNA analysis conducted for a TV documentary.
The Dead Famous DNA film - to be screened on Channel 4 on Wednesday - will claim that tests on hair samples said to have come from a monogrammed hairbrush used by Braun, show she was possibly of Jewish ancestry.
A team of scientists examined the hair and found a particular sequence within the DNA, which had been passed down the maternal line - the haplogroup N1b1 - which the channel said was "strongly associated" with Ashkenazi Jews, who make up around 80% of the global Jewish population.
Many Ashkenazi Jews in Germany converted to Catholicism in the 19th century.
Presenter Mark Evans sourced the hair samples, which were originally found by American army intelligence officer Paul Bae at Hitler's mountain retreat.
He said: "This is a thought-provoking outcome - I never dreamt that I would find such a potentially extraordinary and profound result."
The only way to prove beyond doubt that the samples were from Braun would be to take a DNA swab from one of her two surviving female descendants, but both refused.

A documentary series on Britains Channel 4 reveals that Adolf Hitlers wife, Eva Braun, had Jewish ancestry, a conclusion drawn from DNA samples the show Dead Famous DNA believes to be Brauns.
They tested hair samples from a brush that was apparently used by Braun, and the DNA sample they examined revealed a striking similarity to a sequence strongly associated with Ashkenazi Jews.
However, there is a twist.
Although programme-makers said the provenance of the hair was strong, the only way to prove beyond doubt that it was from Braun would have been to take a DNA swab from one of her two surviving female descendants, but both refused when approached, so there is still an element of mystery.
So only time and further DNA analysis will tell, then
Channel 4 came under fire last week for paying a Holocaust denier a sizable amount of money for a lock of the Fhrers own hair for the show.
