AMERICAN JEWISH HERITAGE MONTH: First annual Jewish playwriting competition debuts in New Haven

NEW HAVEN On May 5, some 75 theater-goers pulled out their cell phones to text butter, schmear, or works representing their favorite of three plays just read on the stage of the Off Broadway Theater in New Haven

New Haven theater goers vote for their favorite Jewish play

.

The event marked the first annual Jewish Plays Project (JPP) in New Haven, a national initiative founded two years ago by David Winitsky to rejuvenate Jewish theater. This years competition netted 167 entries from around the country, which were winnowed to 10 contenders by a Manhattan-based panel of artists. A local review committee in New Haven selected three finalists.

The evening was directed by Winitsky and presented by JCC of Greater New Haven cultural arts manager, DeDe Jacobs-Komisar. The program featured Let Me Go by Jonathan Caren, The Karpovsky Variations by Adam Kraar, and Estelle Singerman by David Rush. The readings featured actors Michael Boland, William DeMeritt, Mitch Greenberg, Margaret Ladd, and Adina Verson.

The New Haven audience selected Estelle Singerman, which follows the title character through a Chicago summer night as she desperately searches for someone to say Kaddish for her after she dies.

The greatest thing about Davids sweet adult fable is its range of characters, each deeply seated in his or her own faith and spiritual traditions. And, at all times, each one chooses to respect different beliefs as vital and necessary, says Winitsky. We could all learn a lot from Seymour the Buddhist giraffe.

Spotlight on Entertainment

Two weeks ago, we introduced American Jewish Heritage Month which focuses this year on the world of entertainment with a look at talented actors who grew up in Connecticut. This week, we take a look at two more of our homegrown stars.

Harrison Greene

Hometown: Stamford / West Hartford

Harrison Greene

Harrison Greene grew up in Stamford. He and started performing at age seven in Curtain Call Performing Arts improv classes, and then in school plays, summer theatre, chorus, and band. He moved with his family to West Hartford in 2004, the summer before his freshman year at Hall High School. Raised in a Conservative Jewish home, Greene was a member of USY and volunteered in the community through the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford. After graduating, Greene attended UConn, where he participated in the campus Hillel and earned a BFA in acting.

Being Jewish has had a major impact on me and has certainly influenced my work, he says. It plays a part in my creating a character and in the way I think and react to certain material. Understanding who I am as a person and seeing where I stand socially is necessary for being an actor. And of course, there is the influence of many Jewish people in show business. Growing up, I was inspired by the Marx Brothers, Woody Allen, and Dustin Hoffman, to name a few.

Now 23, Greene recently performed in No One Isat the Manhattan Repertory Theatre. He is a member of a new independent sketch-comedy team, Nerds On Fire, based at the Peoples Improv Theater in Manhattan. This spring, he is acting in a short film being produced in Connecticut.

Biden Makes Teleprompter Joke, Offers Jews 'Uncomfortable' Flattery

Posted By on May 22, 2013

Vice President Joe Biden joins President Barack Obama in the State Dining Room of the White House, May 21, 2013.

Vice President Joe Biden joked about his boss and offered Jewish Americans gushing flattery about their "immense" influence at a Tuesday evening event celebrating Jewish American Heritage Month.

The loquacious Biden opened with a joke after asking that his teleprompter be removed.

"You can't tell Barack that the teleprompter's down. The standing joke in the office is Barack's learning to speak without a teleprompter; I'm learning to speak with one," he said, gently mocking President Barack Obama at the Washington, D.C., event, according to a press pool report.

Biden then pivoted to praising the "immense" and "outsized" influence of Jewish Americans, a touchy topic that has throughout history been the subject of conspiracy theories and justification for persecution and genocide.

"No group has had such an outsized influence per capita," Biden said, according to the pool report. "You make up 11 percent of the seats in the United States Congress. You make up one-third of all Nobel laureates. ... I think you vastly underestimate the impact you've had on the development of this nation."

Biden said Jewish Americans were largely responsible for civil rights movements for African-Americans, women and gay people. Most recently, he said, Jews were influential in helping increase the percentage of Americans who support extending marriage rights to same-sex couples.

"I believe what affects the movements in America, what affects our attitudes in America are as much the culture and the arts as anything else," Biden said. "I bet you 85 percent of those changes, whether it's in Hollywood or social media are a consequence of Jewish leaders in the industry. The influence is immense, the influence is immense. And, I might add, it is all to the good."

Biden Praises Jews, Goes Too Far, Accidentally Thrills Anti-Semites

Posted By on May 22, 2013

Joe Biden spoke last night in honor of Jewish American Heritage Month. Biden has long, deep ties to the Jewish community Obama actually picked him in 2008 in part to reassure skittish Jewish Democrats. Biden indeed offered fulsome, heartfelt praise in his remarks, before wandering into highly uncomfortable terrain and delivering a speech that is likely to be quoted by anti-Semites for years and decades to come. (Its already the subject of excited discussion among the white supremacist community.)

Bidens remarks were not anti-Semitic. They were very, very philo-Semitic. The thrust of his largely unscripted monologue is that Jews have contributed enormously to the United States. Thats obviously a standard spiel for praising any ethnic group, but Biden took care to emphasize that Jews have not just contributed their share to the United States, but far more:

The Jewish people have contributed greatly to America. No group has had such an outsized influence per capita as all of you standing before you, and all of those who went before me and all of those who went before you

You make up 11 percent of the seats in the United States Congress. You make up one-third of all Nobel laureates

I think you, as usual, underestimate the impact of Jewish heritage. I really mean that. I think you vastly underestimate the impact youve had on the development of this nation.

Its obviously true that Jews have flourished in the United States and, as Biden says, have achieved massively disproportionate representation in fields like science, culture, politics, academia, and so on.

Jews regard this fact with a mixture of pride and neurosis. The neurosis is a fear that our success will be seen as a kind of invidious control, that the broader society will at some point say, no, you have too much. Ivy League schools in the last century imposed first overt quotas, and then more subtle geographic and character-based admissions standards, precisely to suppress the disproportionate Jewish share of their student body. The first generation of Hollywood moguls lived in terror that they would be seen as using their control of film to impose a particular Jewish slant upon the culture and labored endlessly to dispel any such suspicions.

Its also true that, while Jewish opinions run the ideological gamut, they have clustered heavily on the left end of the political spectrum. When you combine that fact with the fact of disproportionate Jewish representation in politics and culture, you have a weirdly shared belief among philo-Semites and anti-Semites. As Biden proceeds to laud Jewish contributions to American politics, you can see the audience go from kvelling to shvitzing:

The embrace of immigration is part of that, as is the involvement of Jews in social justice movements.

You cant talk about the civil rights movement in this country without talking about Jewish freedom riders and Jack Greenberg, he said, telling a story about seeing a group of Jewish activists at a segregated movie theater in Delaware. You cant talk about the womens movement without talking about Betty Friedan

Biden Praises Jewish Leaders for Helping Change Americans’ Views on Gay Marriage

Posted By on May 22, 2013

WASHINGTON (TheBlaze/AP) -- Vice President Joe Biden is praising Jewish leaders for helping change American attitudes about gay marriage -- and for the group's role in other important issues.

During a speech last night, Biden said culture and arts change people's attitudes. He also cited social media and the old NBC TV series "Will and Grace" as examples of what helped changed perspectives on one of America's most contentious social issues.

While speaking on Tuesday night at a Jewish American Heritage Month reception hosted by the Democratic National Committee, the vice-president said, "Think -- behind of all that, I bet you 85 percent of those changes, whether it's in Hollywood or social media, are a consequence of Jewish leaders in the industry."

Politico has more regarding Biden's words about this group's impact on American culture:

"It wasn't anything we legislatively did. It was 'Will and Grace,' it was the social media. Literally. That's what changed peoples' attitudes. That's why I was so certain that the vast majority of people would embrace and rapidly embrace" gay marriage, Biden said.

"Think behind of all that, I bet you 85 percent of those changes, whether it's in Hollywood or social media are a consequence of Jewish leaders in the industry. The influence is immense, the influence is immense. And, I might add, it is all to the good," he said.

Jews have also been key to the evolution of American jurisprudence, he continued, namedropping Brandeis, Fortas, Frankfurter, Cardozo, Ginsberg, Breyer, Kagan. "You literally can't. You can't talk about the recognition of ... rights in the Constitution without looking at these incredible jurists that we've had."

"Jewish heritage has shaped who we are - all of us, us, me - as much or more than any other factor in the last 223 years. And that's a fact," he said.

In sum: Biden said the influence is immense and that those changes have been for the good; he also drove home the notion that Jewish values are an essential part of who Americans are.
