Grzegorz Karnas - You Can #39;t Be Telling Lies (act 2) - Sny 2004 Grzegorz Karnas - voice, tooth loops Micha #322; Tokaj - fender piano Damian Kurasz - guitars Robert Kubiszyn - basses Sebastian Frankiewicz - drums Tomasz Szukalski - saksofon Jerzy Ma #322;ek - trumpet Adam Ole #347; - cello Patrycja Gola - voice Bogusz Wekka - percussions This CD is a surprise for me -- a surprise in every positive respect. Through his new album, Grzegorz Karnas has become, for me, one of those musicians who have transcended the thin barrier that separates craft from art. "Dreams" is not just an album that makes for excellent listening - it #39;s also something different, that stands apart from the omnipresent mass of standardised products out there.

The Israel Lobby and the Fight Against Chuck Hagel

Posted By on January 8, 2013

Lauren Victoria Burke / AP

Chuck Hagel delivers remarks to the Brookings Institution on U.S. foreign policy and the 2008 presidential campaign in Washington on June 26, 2008.

Jeff Goldberg has an interesting post about the mixed feelings that the America Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) may have about launching a major lobbying campaign against Chuck Hagel.

He may be rightand it would be wonderful if truebut I know that AIPAC has been quietly working the phones, arguing against the nomination. There is a difference between that and a full-bore lobbying campaign, but AIPACs pro-Netanyahu posture has always been clear. (Update: Eli Lake, who knows this territory well, is also reporting that AIPAC will stand down.)

While on this subject, I should note, with sadness, that Ed Kocha great mayor of New York and one of the most clever politicians Ive ever coveredhas gone off the high board on the Hagel nomination. There is much that is odious about Kochs statement, but the idea that the President has betrayed Israel by nominating Hagel is the most outrageous.

(MORE: Hagel: A Different Kind of Defense Secretary)

These notions of betrayal and appeasement (pace Bill Kristol), perfumed with intimations of anti-Semitism are part of a hyperbolic corruption of common usage, favored by neoconservatives and their extremist allies. Can Nazi metaphors be far behind? Oh, wait a minute: the idea that negotiating with Iran constitutes appeasement, as Kristol has harangued, is a direct reference to Neville Chamberlains catastrophic cave to Hitler in the 1930s.

This sort of thinking pre-supposes two false premises: that Jews are as weak and helpless as they were in Nazi Germany, and that the dreadful regime in Iran has the strength and imperial hunger of the Nazis. The truth is, Israel is the most powerful country in the region, by far. It has a nuclear arsenal. It has a powerful military and a nonpareil intelligence service. Iran, by contrast, is near economic collapse as a result of the global economic sanctions organized byyesBarack Obama. Its nuclear program is constantly sabotaged by computer viruses launched by a joint effort of Israels intelligence services andyesthe Obama Administration. Is this what Ed Koch means by betrayal?

There is no question that Irans government is a disgrace, but not because its powerless president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, goes about denying the holocaust and threatening Israel with elimination. It is a disgrace in the same way that the other police state dictatorships in the regionthe Assads, Mubaraks and Saddamswere disgraceful. The patina of religiosity cloaks a military dictatorship run by the Revolutionary Guard Corps, which is brutal and dangerous, but eminently containable.

Can Natan Sharansky fix the Western Wall?

TEL AVIV (JTA) -- He brought unprecedented attention to the plight of Soviet Jewry. He stood up to the KGB. He survived nine years in Siberia. He served in Israels fractious government.

Now, Natan Sharansky is facing his next challenge: finding a solution to the growing battle over womens prayer restrictions at the Western Wall, Judaisms holiest site.

In recent months, Diaspora Jewish activists have grown increasingly incensed by the arrests and detention of women seeking to pray publicly at the site in keeping with their religious practices but in violation of the rules of the wall under which women may not sing aloud, wear tallit prayer shawls or read from the Torah.

The controversy threatens to drive a wedge between Diaspora Jewry, where egalitarian prayer is common, and Israel, which has upheld Orthodox rules at the wall, also known as the Kotel. American Jewish leaders in the United States say the rules alienate Reform and Conservative Jews. Within Israel, too, the wall has become a flashpoint for non-Orthodox religious activists and the Kotels haredi Orthodox leadership.

Two weeks ago, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked Sharansky, chairman of the Jewish Agency for Israel, to look into the controversy and propose solutions. The question is whether the former refusenik leader and human rights advocate can resolve a dispute that pits Jew against Jew.

Will it happen through Sharansky? asked Anat Hoffman, chairwoman of Women of the Wall, a group that organizes monthly women's services at the Kotel. That I doubt, but Im willing to give him a chance. Sharansky will understand how much traction this issue has.

Hoffman was arrested in October for wearing a tallit at the site, and several more of the groups members have been detained at subsequent services.

Bill Kristol's big plans

Posted By on January 7, 2013

In the weeks since Election Day -- as Mitt Romney faded into obscurity, John Boehner lost control of the House GOP and tea partiers turned on one another -- Bill Kristol has been busy charting the future of the Republican Party.

Kristol was among the first conservatives to break with GOP orthodoxy on raising taxes, and he and his allies advanced their hawkish neoconservative foreign policy by pushing the controversy that sank Susan Rice's potential nomination for secretary of state.

And Kristol is just getting started.

One Kristol-linked group, the Emergency Committee for Israel, has already aired ads targeting former Sen. Chuck Hagel, who is Obama's nominee for defense secretary and is planning a "substantial" paid-media campaign opposing the nomination. Kristol believes Hagel is both a "bitter opponent of Israel" and "very weak on Iran."
