The venerable and prestigious Orthodox synagogue of Shaar Hashomayim in Montreal, Canada, has called on Chief Rabbi David Lau to issue an apology to its communal leader Rabbi Adam Scheier after having rejected his affirmation of the Jewish status of a former congregant. In addition, the community sent an official letter of protest to the Israeli consul-general for Quebec strongly objecting to the rejection by the Chief Rabbinate of Scheiers affirmation, and those of another 159 Diaspora rabbis

(photo credit:KAREN ABRAMSON) More than half of Jewish Israelis are in favor of changing the current status quo on religious life in the public realm, believing that current arrangements reflect haredi or religious-Zionist values, a new poll has found. The survey, conducted for the Israel Democracy Institute, found that 55% of Jewish Israelis think that the way religious issues are handled by the state should change, compared with 33% who said they oppose changes.

"We want to bring our window home." There is something missing in the Congregation Beth Shalom of the Blue Hills new home. The synagogue, tucked away in a quiet field, was built in May 2016. But a 1950 stained glass window, which has been with the community for 60 years, remains in the synagogues former location on Blue Hill Avenue.

(JTA) The Egyptian government reportedly has approved a $22 million plan to restore a 160-year-old synagogue in Alexandria. The Ministry of Antiquities Project Sector on Wednesdsay approvedthe fundsfor restoring and developing the Eliyahu Hanavi Synagogue, according to the head of the Islamic and Coptic Monuments Department, al-Saeed Helmy Ezzat, The Egypt Independent reported from a translation of the Arabic-language daily Al-Masry Al-Youm. The synagogue was forced to close several months ago after part of its ceiling fell down, The Independent reported.
