As we approach the end of 5781, I find myself both hopeful and concerned about the challenges that lay ahead for We The People of the United States, for People Israel and all of us who inhabit Planet Earth.

In a time of selfies and self-esteem, humility is a forgotten virtue. The Jewish traditions emphasis on humility runs counter to our zeitgeist, which places each individual at the very center of the universe. It is challenging for us today to make sense of Maimonides suggestion that the proper way is not merely that man be humble, but that one should be of a very diminutive spirit, and their spirit extremely lowly.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Rabbi Minna Brombergs work addressing weight stigma in Jewish communal spaces took her to a lot of synagogues. She was often bewildered when organizers provided her a chair that was too small. Getting people to acknowledge her body and their discomfort with it is one reason she founded Fat Torah a year ago.

It took 48 hours to get here, but we have finally arrived in Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu. In this weeks Torah portion, we continue reading Mosess final speeches, incredibly beautiful and lofty addresses meant to prepare the Jewish nation for entering, conquering, and then living in, the Holy Land. In the address asking the Children of Israel to worship God and walk in His path, Moses says: For the Lord, your God, is God of gods and the Lord of the lords, the great mighty and awesome God, Who will show no favor, nor will He take a bribe. He executes the judgment of the orphan and widow, and He loves the stranger, to give him bread and clothing (Deuteronomy 10:17-18)
