The Elk Grove Sports Bar presents their new Comedy Night every other Wednesday. The open mic, stand-up comedy event will be held next on Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. The Sporty is located at 9661 Elk Grove Florin Road. For more information, call (916) 685-6103.

The Elk Grove Fine Arts Center will hold their monthly First Saturday Art Reception on Feb. 2, 4-7 p.m. at 9080 Elk Grove Blvd. in Old Town Elk Grove. The featured artist this month is Jolene Matson who will be showing her oil paintings and sculpture artwork. Community artists will continue with their show. The shows will run through Feb. 23. This event is free to the public. Also featured that evening will be the centers ongoing tile glazing fundraiser. Support the arts for $15 per tile and donate your hand-glazed tile to be installed on the centers front entry wall.The Art Center/Gift Gallery is open Wednesdays through Saturdays, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., or by appointment. The Elk Grove Community Concert Band will perform on Feb. 4 at the Laguna Town Hall in Elk Grove, sponsored by the Cosumnes Community Services District (CSD). The concert begins at 7 p.m. Included in Monday evenings performance will be music with a high flying theme, such as Alfred Reeds, 7th Suite for Band - A Century of Flight, Samuel Hazos, In Flight, and Space and Beyond, a medley of popular music from space-themed movies. In addition, the band will perform a medley of songs by composer and silent film star Charlie Chaplin, and will premier their own arrangement of Frank Zappas Strictly Genteel, a version of the piece once performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. The Laguna Town Hall is located at 3020 Renwick Ave. There is no admission charge but a donation benefiting the Elk Grove Community Band and the CSD, would be gladly accepted. The Elk Grove Fine Arts Center will be presenting the following workshops in February at the Arts Center, 9080 Elk Grove Blvd. in Old Town Elk Grove Pastels with Russell Frank, Feb. 9, 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. The fee is $40 with no materials fee; Reflections in Oils with Mark Johnson, Feb. 13-14, 1-4 p.m. The fee is $40 with no materials fee. The Elk Grove Western Festival Organization (EGWFO) calls for student artists to participate in the 2013 Elk Grove Western Festival Poster Contest. The contest is now open to all high school junior and senior students in the Elk Grove Unified School District. The 56th annual festival will be held May 3-5 and the theme will be The American West. The winning entry will receive a cash prize of $200 and become the official poster for the 2013 event. There will be a second prize of $100, and a third prize of $50. The winning entry will be used in the Western Festivals marketing and advertising, and on the Elk Grove Artists High School Art Contest art booklet cover. The winning entries will be displayed in the art show in the Elk Grove Regional Park Pavilion during the festival. They will then be displayed at the Elk Grove Fine Arts Center, 9080 Elk Grove Blvd. in Old Town Elk Grove through the end of May and returned to the artists. All entries become the property of the EGWF organization. The poster entry must be submitted by the deadline of March 1.
