Due to the coronavirus shutdown, Carolyn Dorfman Dance has had to postpone its May 2 Performance and Gala Benefit at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, but still has devised a way to keep its patrons on their toes.

The Union-based dance company has begun offering free Together! contemporary modern dance technique classes via Zoom from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays.

Each session, taught by one of the company members, will feature elements of a work from Dorfmans repertory. Participants also will learn a excerpt from of the choreographers pieces and the class will end with a Q&A with Dorfman and her dancers.

For over 38 years I have created work and programming that celebrates the uniqueness of the individual and the power and beauty of community. My work is about connection -- the world as it is, and hope for the world as it can be, said Dorfman. These classes on Zoom during this most challenging time, connect us in real time to this vision and approach to community.

"Youre invited to join this joyous community of movers who are uplifted by one another and the work. . . . Lets feed the body, mind and the soul. Join us!

The first online class, held on Friday, March 27, drew 93 participants. While free, the company welcomes donations at cddc.ejoinme.org/donate. For more information, visit the companys website at carolyndorfman.dance.
