Rabbi at D.C. synagogue charged with voyeurism

WASHINGTON (AP) D.C. police have charged a rabbi at a Georgetown synagogue with voyeurism.

Police say 62-year-old Barry Freundel was arrested Tuesday morning at his home. Freundel is the rabbi at Kesher Israel Congregation.

NBC4, which obtained a copy of the police report, reports that a camera and recorder hidden in a clock radio were found in the womens shower in the mikvah, a ritual cleansing bath, at the synagogue.

According to the congregations website, Freundel has been the rabbi at Kesher Israel for 25 years. The site says Freundel is an adjunct instructor at the University of Maryland and Georgetown University. He also teaches at Towson University.

A message left at Freundels phone number was not immediately returned.

A notice on the synagogues website says Freundel has been suspended without pay.

Police arrested Barry Freundel at his home in Washington, D.C., Tuesday morning. He's charged with voyeurism.

A witness told WBAL-TV's sister station in Washington, D.C., WRC-TV, that Freundel installed a hidden camera inside the women's showers at Georgetown's Kesher Israel Orthodox Synagogue.

The showers are purifying baths that Freundel pushed to establish. They are primarily used by those converting to Judaism.

According to police, the hidden camera looked similar to one that's disguised as a clock radio. The police report said a witness told investigators that the rabbi said he was using it for ventilation in the shower.

Freundel, 62, has been the spiritual leader at Kesher Israel for 25 years. He is also an associate professor who teaches in the Philosophy and Religious Studies Department at Towson University and at the school's Hebrew Institute.

Many students at Towson found the charges disturbing.

"That's pretty nasty to me. That's inappropriate, especially for younger women and everything. That makes me feel like I can't go anywhere without being watched," said student Caitlin Turlik.

"Despite whether he is religious or not, a teacher cannot do such type of things because students learn from him," said a Towson student who only identified himself as Kridhik.

President's Ally Blasts 'Racist' France in Memoir

Published October 15, 2014.

Bernard Kouchner, the previous foreign minister of France, said that former president Nicolas Sarkozy was widely disliked because of his Jewish origins.

Kouchner made the assertion during an interview Tuesday for RMC radio in responding to the interviewers question about Kouchners observations about Sarkozy in Kouchners newly published book, Crossed Memories.

In the book, which was published last month, Kouchner wrote: Nicolas Sarkozy wasnt cherished; he was detested also because he was the son of a Hungarian and the grandson of a Jew.

According to a book on the origins of Sarkozy a former interior minister for the centrist UMP party who served as president between 2007 and 2012 his paternal grandfather was a Sephardic Jew of Greek origin named Aaron Mallah.

During the RMC interview, Kouchner said of Sarkozy and his origins: I think France is a racist country, certainly. But he got on alright, he achieved anyway though originally, I think this issue was present.

Last month Sarkozy announced he would run for internal elections to lead UMP.

According to recent polls, he received 45 percent of the Jewish vote in the first rounds of the 2007 and 2012 presidential elections despite the Jewish communitys longstanding preference for leftwing candidates.

Ex-gang member Hasidic convert was a fake cop: police

Posted By on October 16, 2014

A former Latin Kings gang member who converted to become a Hasidic Jew allegedly used a fake badge to pose as a law-enforcement officer, a source said.

Roberto Eddy Santos spent years in prison for violent robberies in the 90s but changed his name to Avorham Gross after being released. He then claimed to be part of the non-existent child abuse prevention task force, according to law-enforcement sources.

Gross even tricked police into collaring a woman he thought broke into a car, investigators said.

He also used lights and sirens in his own car when he got mad at a NJ Transit bus driver who cut him off so as to pull the bus over, prosecutors said.

Gross wore a fake uniform and a realistic-looking badge for the non-existent police unit, according to court documents.

He is facing charges for conspiracy and possession of a forged instrument, and will appear in court on Wednesday.

Authorities are investigating whether Gross conversion was in fact genuine or whether his religious experience was just part of his scheme to defraud, the sources said.
