The danger of gossip

Its out of my mouth before I know Ive said it. Only right afterward do I recognize the feeling of giving in to the urge to say something I shouldnt, something that is mean, judgmental or just not mine to tell. When I hear my husband or a friend repeating what I shouldnt have said, I protest: No, no, I was just talking. I didnt mean it.

Torah cautions the children of Israel in Leviticus 19:16 not to be tale-bearers. Talmud considers lashon harah, which means evil tongue and refers to gossip or slander, to be as bad as murder, adultery and idol worship combined. Speaking negatively of others even when what you say is true or listening to someone else speak negatively without protesting is a sure way to lose your place in the olam habah, the world to come.

If you dont have something nice to say, come sit by me is not what Jewish educators call the Jewish Way. Its good to be reminded of this as we engage in self-reflection during the High Holy Days.

Rabbi Gabriel Botnick of Temple Aliyah in Woodland Hills likes to tell the Chasidic tale about a man asking his rabbi how to repair damage caused by malicious gossip. The rabbi tells the man to take a pillow up on the roof, shake out all the feathers and then gather them all in again. Like the feathers, words let loose cant be called back. (Some rabbis teach that, to be on the safe side, we shouldnt talk about other people at all.)

Words are powerful in Jewish thinking. The world itself was created with them. The Targum Jonathan (an Aramaic translation of Torah) calls the very breath that made the first human come alive a speaking spirit. We have a holy book and a holy language. Discussion, between study partners or over centuries, is at the heart of our spiritual practice. Vows of silence are rare in Jewish tradition.

In the ultra-Orthodox world, where children learn to be very careful about lashon harah, this can create confusion about telling. Is it OK to report a bully? Someone in power being inappropriate? In more liberal circles, there is a caution about who can use what language. Some words are off-limits for some people. All denominations recognize the power of words and struggle with how to use them for good.

So how am I supposed to know when I am using them for good? My hunger to be in the know, whether its mean, judgmental or just the urge to share a good story, often sweeps right over my urge to be kind, modest or temperate.

The 19th-century Lithuanian rabbi Israel Meir Kagan, known as the Chofetz Chaim, Hebrew for desires life as in the words from Psalm 34: Who is the person who desires life and loves days that he may see the good? Guard your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit made a career of writing about issues of lashon harah.

What if you are forced to do it? What if you will lose money if you dont do it? What if you feel really, really certain someone will benefit from hearing what you have to say?

St. Olaf Assistant Professor of Religion Mara Benjamin has been awarded a National Endowment for the Humanitiesfellowship that will enable her to complete her second book, Parental Obligation, Power, and Care in Jewish Theological Perspective.

In my new book, I intend to synthesize critical reflection on parental caregiving with contemporary Jewish thought, Benjamin says. My project investigates how pre-modern Jewish sources can aid in constructing a useful description of parental obligation toward children.

This new work will be primarily geared toward scholars and graduate students in feminist studies, Jewish thought, and religious studies, but Benjamin hopes to also attract readers who would like to reflect on childrearing in philosophical and religious studies.

Benjamin is spending the 201415 academicyear on sabbatical in New York, where she will draft her manuscript and collaborate with other scholars.

While Im in New York, I am working with people who are helping me understand some of how classical Jewish texts, such as the Talmud, shape the discussions in the pre-modern period, she says.

Benjamins initial research was supported by a 2013 National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Stipend. This project builds on Benjamins previous work and her bookRosenzweigs Bible: Reinventing Scripture for Jewish Modernity, but will bring a specifically feminist angle to the question of how religious thinkers accommodate pressures of modernity.

Neighbors blast proposed synagogue settlement as selectmen prepare to weigh in on Thursday

Posted By on October 2, 2014

A tentative settlement has been reached between the Greenwich Reform Synagogue and the towns Zoning Board of Appeals, but the Board of Selectmen has yet to weigh in on it and will do so on Thursday.

Currently the Board of Selectmen is scheduled to be briefed on the proposed settlement at its Thursday, Oct. 2 meeting in executive session. However Selectman Drew Marzullo said Tuesday night that he wanted the discussion to take place in open session so that people could have their chance to weigh in on it publicly. While the settlement has been agreed to in principle by the board and the synagogue, neighbors are infuriated by it and are likely to turn out in force to speak against it at both the selectmen meeting at 10 a.m. in the Town Hall Meeting Room and the 6 p.m. Zoning Board of Appeals meeting, both of which are on Oct. 2.

The Zoning Board of Appeals will go into executive session at 6 p.m. to discuss the proposed settlement but are then scheduled to return to public session at 7 p.m. to discuss it. The Board of Selectmen also have the discussion scheduled for executive session but would have to return to public session to have any vote. Mr. Marzullo has said he would vote against going into executive session for the discussion and that it should be done completely in public instead.

This stems from the ZBA denying a special exception that the Greenwich Reform Synagogue was seeking for its plan to build a new synagogue on Orchard Street by a two to two margin with one abstention. That spurred the synagogue to file suit against the town in the United States District Court for Connecticut, citing the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act and claiming they had been unfairly discriminated against. As part of its suit, the synagogue said that the ZBA had approved churches in several residential neighborhoods throughout town.

Under the proposed settlement, the ZBA would within 10 days after the agreement becomes official issue the special exception and modifications would be made to the plan. The number of parking spaces at the proposed synagogue would be increased to 52 from 46 including two handicapped spaces, the driveway would be shifted from the southern portion of the property to the northern portion and the overall size of the proposed building would be reduced by approximately 2,100 cubic feet. The synagogue will also withdraw its suit against the town as part of the settlement.

Opponents of the synagogue are infuriated by the tentative agreement, with some even saying that the town had sold them out. But the Board of Selectmen has not had a chance to speak on this and Mr. Marzullo stressed on Tuesday night that nothing had been approved yet. Selectman David Theis has previously recused himself from these discussions due to his previously stated objections to the project and it is unclear if he will participate on Thursday, meaning Mr. Marzullo may be facing off one on one with First Selectman Peter Tesei on this.

The advocacy group Cos Cob Families Fighting for Residential Rights (CCFFRR) sent out several email blasts in recent days urging people to speak out against the proposed settlement by emailing the selectmen and members of the Representative Town Meetings District 8, which includes the property in question. Neighbors have objected to the project since it was first announced, citing worries about the impact of a house of worship in an otherwise completely residential neighborhood.

Sarah Littman, a Cos Cob resident with property close to the proposed Orchard Street location for the synagogue, said that neighbors were blindsided by the announcements about the meetings on Oct. 2 and that they felt they were purposely scheduled to deny Cos Cob residents a chance to air our views and exercise our right to due process. Ms. Littman asked if it was coincidence the ZBA meeting was beind held the same night as Cos Cob Schools open house, making it difficult for residents to turn out.

Greenich Reform Synagogue claims that they want to work with the neighbors, but it is exactly this kind of thing that we in Cos Cob have been dealing with from the very beginning and the kind of behavior that has increased, rather than mitigated, opposition to their development in the neighborhood, Ms. Littman wrote in an e-mail to the selectmen that she shared with the Post on Wednesday morning. I would remind you, as our selectmen, that you still represent Cos Cob. I can tell you from the emails and phone calls I have been receiving in the last 12 hours that there are many here who feel that you have failed dismally at that responsibility.

Ms. Littman added that she didnt feel moving the discussion to public session would be sufficient given how short a time frame this was being done on.

Synagogue Leader's Car Torched in Atlantic City

Arson Suspected in Attack on David Kusher of Rodef Sholom By JTA

Published October 01, 2014.

A synagogue leaders car exploded in a suspected arson attack in Atlantic City, N.J.

In the wee hours of Saturday morning, several hours after the close of Rosh Hashanah, police discovered a Ford Explorer engulfed in flames outside Congregation Rodef Sholom, an Orthodox shul. The fire caused severe damage to the parking lot and the synagogues outer walls, according to the Jewish Exponent of Philadelphia.

The car belonged to David Kushner, who serves as spiritual leader of the southern New Jersey synagogue though he is not an ordained rabbi. Kushner, who runs a wedding hall in Lakewood, N.J., learned about the fire when he showed up for Sabbath services the next morning.

The car had been towed overnight immediately after the incident by the Fire Department for further investigation, so I saw charred remains, Kushner told the Jewish Exponent, which quoted Kushner as saying that firemen were examining whether the blaze was a hate crime.

The synagogue hasnt had any previous occurrences of anti-Semitism, the newspaper said.

The fact that in America in 2014, a rabbis car parked at his synagogue during Rosh Hashanah services could be engulfed in flames and the subject of arson is beyond comprehension, Nancy Baron-Baer, the Anti-Defamation Leagues regional director, told the Jewish Exponent. Synagogues need to be alert every day.
