Jewish Center Ages Well

Posted By on May 9, 2014

For the past year, Manetto Hill Jewish Center (MHJC), a progressive Conservative synagogue in Plainview, has been celebrating its 45th birthday. And members both long-timers and new ones are comfortable in its skin.

A small, but growing synagogue, its motto large enough to serve you, small enough to know you, has been embraced by its 200-family congregation. Ronni Mordechai, a mother of two young adult children from Levittown, joined MHJC three years ago.

My husband and I found a community, of caring people who shared our values, that we didnt have before, she said. From the moment we stepped foot in the door, we felt welcomed, appreciated and wanted. Especially my husband, Shlomo, who is a regular worshipper and pretty darn handy with a hammer and paintbrush.

Lisa Fogelson agrees. Two years ago, she and her husband, Jason, started a monthly Shabbat and Me program for parents and children two-years-old and under. This year, they started a Shabbat Tots program for older children. They provide fun, educational services with puppets and musical instruments. They even spearheaded a unique, musical childrens service open to the community on Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year and one of the holiest days in the Jewish calendar.

As a new mother, I was looking for an egalitarian synagogue, one that would nurture our son and truly make him and us feel welcome, Fogelson said. We also wanted to make sure he would receive a quality Jewish education leading up to and after his bar mitzvah. Manetto Hill has more than met our expectations. We found an extended family here.

Following the retirement of its long-term and beloved Rabbi Morris Bernstein five years ago, the synagogue board decided to take advantage of the transition and engage in strategic planning. Headed by then-president Larry Kurtzman, himself the son of MHJC founding members, a large committee was formed, comprised of a diverse group of congregants.

We balance the advantages of traditional and progressive aspects of Jewish life, said Kurtzman. We revised our mission to reflect who we are today: a Conservative, egalitarian warm synagogue that creates an inviting home for the lifelong spiritual, educational and fellowship needs of our members and the community at large. We truly care about our members and the entire Jewish community.

Major strides were made in attracting new members, raising more funds, improving its Hebrew school, and continuing its active community programming. A special and extremely affordable dues structure, including free Hebrew school, was initiated to attract new members and young families.

Its never been more exciting to be part of Manetto Hill, said Harvey Cohen, ritual committee chairperson and a long-time pillar of the MHJC community.

A Lion of Socialism is Dead

Daniel De Leon, leader of the Socialist Labor Party, died of a heart attack at Mount Sinai Hospital. The news that De Leon is dead will call forth the deepest feelings of sadness in every Socialists heart. A lion has passed. Figures such as De Leon are few in our movement, not only in America, but throughout the world, as well. Born on the island of Curacao to a family of Sephardic Jews, and sent to Europe to study when he was a young man, he later settled in the United States and founded a Spanish-language newspaper. He later attended Columbia Law School. During the 1880s he became interested in revolutionary Marxism and began working as the editor of the New York Daily People. We at the Forward had our differences with De Leon, but now is not the time to discuss them.

Retaliation after White Paper

After the publication of the British governments white paper on Palestine, English soldiers are standing guard, awaiting outbreaks of violence. Extremist Arabs are furious that the British did not give them more concessions, and are expected to attack both English and Jewish targets. The Jewish population, which is also very unhappy with the results of the latest white paper, is planning a general strike. Special police battalions have been stationed in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Jaffa and Haifa. The British military has also accused the Revisionist Zionists of destroying British property. But even the rest of the Zionists are spoiling for a fight: Jews prepare yourselves for a battle for your national home! a leaflet from the Histadrut announced. Even the rabbis are in on the act: Leading Ashkenazi and Sephardic rabbis have declared fast days, special prayers and shofar blowing in connection to the white paper.

Cantor pushes China to open historic synagogue

Posted By on May 9, 2014

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) is pressing the Chinese government to reopen a historic synagogue in Shanghai.

In an interview with The Hill, Cantor said hes requested a meeting with Chinas ambassador to the United States to discuss the issue and expects to talk to him soon.

It was Cantors first trip to China, a visit that gave him a first-hand look at that countrys handling of minority religions such as Judaism, which is not officially recognized by the government. The group was only the second congressional delegation from the U.S. to visit Shanghai since 2010.

The guided tour of Ohel Rachel was given by one of the rabbis in Shanghai. Cantor said Chinese officials also accompanied him during the visit.

What they would like is the ability to use the synagogue on a regular basis, he said of the small Jewish community in Shanghai.

Though today only a few thousand of Shanghais 24 million people practice Judaism, the religion has a long history in the city.

Sephardic Jews built the Ohel Rachel Synagogue in the late 19th century, at a time when Shanghai was home to tens of thousands of Jews. In the late 1930s and early 1940s, at least 25,000 Jews fled Europe for sanctuary in Shanghai, which took them in at a time when many other countries were turning away Jewish refugees. A number of active synagogues existed in Shanghai during this period.

After World War II, many Jews left Shanghai and the Ohel Rachel Synagogue fell into disuse under communist rule.

The synagogue now hosts the Shanghai Education Commission, complicating efforts to turn it back into a functioning place of worship. For a time, the synagogue was used as a warehouse by the commission.

The Ohel Rachel was reopened briefly in 2010 when Shanghai hosted the worlds fair, but was closed again when the fair ended and is now only used for religions ceremonies on the High Holy Days. In 2002, it was placed on the World Monument Funds list of endangered historic structures.

Hasidim Spark Backlash in NYC Exurbs That Entangles Cuomo

Posted By on May 9, 2014

Community groups fighting the growing influence of the ultra-Orthodox Jewish population in New York Citys northwestern exurbs are joining forces to counter the Hasidic bloc vote in this years gubernatorial election.

An organization called United Monroe opposes the expansion of Kiryas Joel, a Hasidic village that brought high-density housing to the rural town as it grew by 63 percent since 2000. Two others, Concerned Citizens Group of Pine Bush and the Rural Community Coalition, are battling plans by a Hasidic developer to build 396 townhouses in Bloomingburg, a village in the foothills of the Catskills.

The activists want to prevent what they call the next East Ramapo, a school district about 40 miles (64 kilometers) northwest of Manhattan, where critics say the state is standing idle as a Hasidic-controlled board of education cuts programs for public-school students. A group called Preserve Rockland and a coalition of religious leaders, including rabbis, are pressing Governor Andrew Cuomo for oversight.

Were essentially becoming the other bloc vote, which is really the only way to gain representation in local, county and state government, said Emily Convers, who leads United Monroe. We need to play the same game. Thats the only way to get heard. Otherwise, we can kiss the mountains and the streams and our homes goodbye.

Tensions in the lower Hudson Valley have been mounting as members of the largest Hasidic community outside of Israel leave gentrifying Brooklyn in search of lower-cost housing and raise families with an average of four children. The local disputes over development and public education are entangling state agencies and Cuomo, a 56-year-old Democrat who faces re-election.

As the groups pool resources, theyre raising the stakes for gubernatorial candidates who have historically focused mainly on winning endorsements from ultra-Orthodox leaders. That includes Cuomo, whose fathers close ties with the Hasidim helped him win their backing in 2010.
