Israel's given the go-ahead to building 11-hundred homes in the disputed area of east Jerusalem. It's likely to further complicate relations with the Palestinians and the frozen Middle East peace talks. The EU reacted by saying the decision should be reversed

For the first time since the creation of Israel 62 years ago, new citizens will be obliged to pledge loyalty to Israel as a "Jewish and democratic state." The bill which was supported by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu came despite a split within his own ruling Likud party after some predicted the new legislation was a terrible mistake which would incite the Arab minority.

Gaza was home to a strong shipbuilding industry before Israel imposed its land and sea blockade on the territory. But with fishermen prevented from sailing beyond three nautical miles, there is no longer any demand for large boats. In a bid to stay afloat, a donor-funded project is teaching fishermen how to repair and build small boats using fibre glass.
