Synagogue tragedy: SAfrica to support victims families

South African President, Jacob Zuma, on Thursday, said he had raised an Inter- Ministerial Task team to help manage the synagogue building collapse in Nigeria, in which 67 South Africans died.

Zuma made the disclosure on the occasion of the Presidential Local Government Summit 2014, taking place in Midrand, Johannesburg.

He said, The task team will support families and do whatever is necessary to manage the impact of this tragedy.

Zumasaid the Minister in the Presidency, Jeff Radebe, would chair the task team which included the minister of cooperative governance and traditional affairs, minister of international relations and cooperation.

Also, he said, the minister of the home affairs, social development, minister of police, state security, health and the minister of defence and military veterans would all be included.

Zuma said the South African High Commission in Nigeria put the number of South African victims in the disaster at 67, but search and rescue missions were still ongoing.

After the search, we will know for sure how many citizens we have lost, he added.

Report says a six-storey building collapsed in Nigerias largest city of Lagos on Friday, killing an unidentified number of people and injuring many others.

However, South Africa sent an advance team of emergency personnel to Lagos to help the rescue work.

Zuma said, We urge all South Africans to provide all possible support to the affected families.
