Australia make changes for Proteas T20

Posted By on October 30, 2014

NSW batsman Damien Mortimer and Victorian quick Ben Ashkenazi have been drafted into the Cricket Australia XI to face the touring South Africans in a T20 match in Sydney on Sunday.

Mortimer replaces Ben McDermott, who has been released from the squad to play in Queensland's Sheffield Shield match this weekend.

Western Australian paceman Joel Paris has been withdrawn from the squad due to a quad injury sustained in the Matador One-Day Cup final on Sunday, opening the door for Ashkenazi.

Mortimer and Ashkenazi teamed together for Australia at the ICC under-19 Cricket World Cup in the UAE earlier this year.

Sunday's match at North Sydney Oval marks the start of South Africa's tour of Australia.

The Proteas will play three T20 matches and then a five-match one-day series against Australia, with the ODI opener in Perth on November 14.

Cricket Australia XI: Ashton Turner (WA, capt), Ben Ashkenazi (Vic), James Bazley (Qld), Jake Doran (NSW), Sebastian Gotch (Vic), Damien Mortimer (NSW), James Muirhead (Vic), James Peirson (Qld), Clive Rose (Tas), Matthew Short (Vic), Kelvin Smith (SA), Timm Van der Gugten (Tas).
