On this day in 1730, the first American synagogue was dedicated on Mill Street in lower Manhattan. The congregation of Shearith Israel was first established in New Amsterdam in 1655 by Jewish settlers, and the Mill Street Synagogue was the first of five locations for the Orthodox congregation. The congregations current location on West 70th Street was dedicated in 1897. Mazel Tov!
